In the offseason following the best Gophers men’s basketball regular season in two decades, coach Richard Pitino sought out ways to demonstrate “the human nature” of complacency, he said.

His team returns nearly every player, welcomes one of its highest-rated recruits ever, and is a popular pick for a Sweet Sixteen run.

So Pitino made the players read the book “The Winner Within: A Life Plan for Team Players,” written by famed basketball coach Pat Riley. The book includes a section on how Riley’s first season with the Los Angeles Lakers yielded a championship, which they failed to win the following two seasons despite better talent.

It served a message to his team about not feeling satisfied just because the Gophers won 23 games last season and earned a No. 5 seed in their first NCAA tournament appearance in four years.

“We can’t allow ourselves to do that,” Pitino said.
