I know this topic has been covered before, and it's a bit premature but i think having a stadium song that represents Gopher Nation in TCF stadium would be pretty cool. Take for example "Jump Around" in Madison or "Sweet Caroline" at Fenway. I was thinking Cab Calloway's "Minnie the Moocher" before the 4th qrt. would be pretty cool. Not only is it a classic song, but it gets the fans involved as well... Any song ideas on the topic would be great!!!! Can't wait for outdoor football!!!!

I love when the band plays classic songs... but when I was at Madison and they played "jump around" it was amazing. I agree we need a song, but I don't know if we can just say this is our song. We may need to test out some songs and see how the students/fans react.

"Kickstart my Heart" by Motley Crue
or
"Welcome to the Jungle" by Guns n' Roses
Either song would really get the crowd going with huge opening guitar riffs. Not to mention the theme of both songs might stick. Of course, "Kickstart my Heart" is kind of about drugs... so maybe not.

No offense to the others who have suggested songs, many of which I like, but many seem to already be part of the fabric of stadium/arena songs across the nation, hardly giving TCF Stadium a unique feel.
Minnesota has a rich musical legacy, but tough to find a song that fits. The Replacements, Husker Du, and Atmosphere haven't captured enough mainstream attention to have all the fans in the student section, much less the entire stadium, clued in to their lyrics.
Bob Dylan and Prince are among rock 'n roll's legends, but the only Dylan song I can think of that would fit (Rainy Day Woman #12 & 35) probably would be frowned upon my the establishment and Prince's Let's Go Crazy, the most likely candidate of his catalog, just seems too obvious and overplayed. Little Red Corvette would be another decent candidate, but I'm afraid it would be voted down by the establishment once again.
How bout Morris Day and The Time's "Jungle Love"? A Minnesota act with a song that would play well over the generations (well, those 40 and younger at least), has a catchy and singable chorus, has the bird call at the beginning of the song which would indicate to the crowd that the song was starting, and would definitely get the crowd bouncing. For the kids in the audience, I've included a live performance of the song (couldn't find the video on you tube). Alas, the lyrics (listed below) probably fall on the too risque side of things for the establishment (and they'd definitely have to get the edited radio version of the song):

Jungle Love
{"Oh-wee-oh-wee-oh" will repeat in BG of song}
I - I've been watching U
I think I wanna know ya (know ya)
Said I, I'm a little dangerous
Girl, I'd love 2 show ya (show ya)
My jungle love, yeah
I think I wanna know ya (know ya)
Jungle love
Girl, I'd love 2 show ya (show ya)
U - U've got a pretty car
I think I wanna drive it (drive it)
I ain't playin', said I drive a little dangerous
Take U 2 my crib, rip U off ... huh! (Jungle love)
Look out, oh!
I think I wanna know ya (know ya)
Oh, jungle love, yeah
Girl, I'd love 2 show ya (show ya)
Come on baby, where's your guts?
U wanna make love or what?
I wanna take U 2 my cage
Lock U up and hide the key
U on..only get water, baby
Cuz if U're hungry, take a bite of me
Oh, jungle love, yes
Think I wanna know ya (know ya)
Hey, jungle love, mmm
Girl, I'd love 2 show ya (show ya)
Yeah, yeah, yeah, jungle love, oh!
I think I wanna know ya (know ya)
Jungle love
Girl, I... I think I wanna, I think I wanna file my nails (Show ya)
Hey Jesse
N..now Jerome, yes!
Check it out!
Jungle love, yeah
I think I wanna know ya (know ya)
Oh, jungle love, yes
Mmm, girl, I'd love 2 show ya (show ya)
Oh, my jungle love, well
Mmm, I think I wanna, I think I wanna (know ya)
Jellybean, uh!
Yeah!
Jesse, gimme one of them sexy solos right here
Break it down, uh!
Yes! Huh
Whoa, eh, hah!
Get..get outta the way
Move over
Yeah
Oh, jungle love, that's right
Can't nobody *&^!#*&^!#*&^!#*&^!# with me, uh
I got a bearskin rug
I got a fireplace 2
And I'm all the way wild, baby
Oh, the things I could do 2 U
Hey!
Jungle love {x3)
Yes, yes!

And jump around isn't obvious and overplayed? I thought the whole point was for the song to be obvious?
coolhandgopher
12-12-2008, 10:23 AM
Okay, obvious, overplayed, a song that I really don't like, and one that is so frantic that it's hard to sing along or keep a beat to, and besides "Let's Go Crazy, Let's Go Nuts", doesn't have much to sing along to.

Purple Rain is basically a showdown between Morris Day and Prince, AKA "the kid", battling over Apolonea, who is a backup singer/song writer. And you call yourself a Minnesotan.

For the record Axl Rose is from Lafayette IN so G'n'R. Just a cool fact. You could do Livin' On Prayer or Don't Stop Believin' but they are done the best by the Boiler Brass Band and the Paint Crew. I know I'm baised but when you have about 5000 students singing at the top of thier lungs "OHHHH WE'RE HALF WAY THERE, OH-OH LIVIN' ON A PRAYER" the have them continue into the game after the time out has ended is the coolest thing it the world. The same goes for Don't Stop Believin' which the Paint Crew does too.
As for Zombie Nation unless your name is Penn State stay away from it. As far as I'm concerned they own the song in the college sports world.
Purdue does Shout betweeen the 3rd and 4th quater of football games. It's pretty cool to have a bunch of students all though there hands in the air at the same time. For the Gophers I don't have any ideas.

Personally, I think something like "O Fortuna" would be amazing. It's not done anywhere else that I'm aware of, and I would think it would be pretty sweet to hear everybody singing along to.
Also, I was thinking about the idea of singing a local hip-hop song. I don't think it'd be practicable, but the idea of a ton of students jumping around to "Get Fly" by Atmosphere or "Rain Water" by Brother Ali just makes me laugh.

Never quite understood "Livin' on a Prayer"? A prayer for another first down? Another win?
I get the Jump Around, and when we get that first post-Thanksgiving day game, we'll all appreciate a 4th quarter stomp.
I like the MN connection, but can't offer anything fresh - keep thinking about some way to work some new lyrics for "Music for Boys"!

I think one thing that most people are missing is that there needs to be something interactive. Jump Around would be super lame if everybody didn't jump around. Jump On It by the Sugar Hill Gang is good but not everybody knows the dance. We need something that all the students will know how to do, or at least know all the words.

I had been away from Gopher home games for a few years until the '08 season and was thrilled to see something like Jump On It played and the student section involvement. I'm not sure how many years it's been done, but if we keep it, it becomes "ours". I'd say right now the participation is great, it's a fun song, and it's in Drumline, so it's got to be good!
For a late in the game, get people out of there seats song, I think it works well.
For pre-game music (other than the Marching Band), let the captains give their two cents.

The souped up version.
I've always thought Quiet Riot was way underrepresented in these Stadium music sweepstakes. By the way if you're winning, the old guard will accept pretty much anything. Nothing like watching old Kansas Memorial Stadium's West Stands (ie alumni section) enjoying ACDC's 'You, Shook Me All Night Long' as the Hawks were taking a 2x4 to the Slavers from Missoura in 2003. One of my favorite memories watching Red Legger Football.

Livin On A Prayer-Bon Jovi, Save a Horse, Ride a Cowboy-Big & Rich. Both good ideas. But I think we should stick with Jump On It. Gets people out their seats and is pretty well-known.
I like the idea of something from one of the local hip hop acts, but I can't think of any one song that really fits.
I can't decide if I hate or love the "jump on it" idea. The Sugarhill Gang's lyrics are so corny, but it might actually make for a great stadium song if everyone got in to it. I do like that it would kind of one up Jump Around in that it could be looked at as a shot at the Wisconsin song.
I think participation is key, and the "U" might have to try out several songs before they find one that clicks.

Please no Bon Jovi.. Do people actually like his music? Maybe the worst excuse for a musician/band/music ever! I would prefer the school band play a song instead of a pumped in version of a lame song..I know I'm being old fashioned, but come on..Bon Jovi?

Great idea! Also, Jungle Love by The Time was a good idea up above. NO to Welcome to the Jungle - the Vikings already own that as do too many other teams. But, if you want a badass opening guitar riff to a song, choose Skid Row's Slave to the Grind
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fmCX-onQOEk . Since I doubt an awesome riff is simply what we're truly looking for, there are a lot of songs that would give the crowd different emotions. The Venga Bus
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aUUGblNjK20 is a song that would lighten up the crowd and maybe get them hopping, too. More Than a Feeling
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IcsVPis1iNs by Boston rocks and is known by most. As for local establishments, Prince has some songs with big beats - what about Gett Off? ;)
There are plenty of dance songs not named Zombie Nation that have big beats...in fact, I think our band plays one of them (I forget the name but love the song) but other old school dance riffs include The Power by Snap
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z33tH-JdPDg, or Rhythm is a Dancer
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tsv5LREqwRI&feature=related; 2 Unlimited had some awesome beats, such as No Limit
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gzyFmilkd80&feature=related, Get Ready for This
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8P0cXvI--AE&feature=related, and The Twilight Zone (which I think our band already plays)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WJ-OU-MtU7w&feature=related; Reel 2 Real had an awesome song I Like to Move It
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VBnkJQWe0JQ&feature=related; then there's the classic James Brown is Dead by LA Style
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HOZeZEyOHz8&feature=related. Finally, N-Trance had a tremendous remake of Staying Alive:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qiKOif0UKRM
Fellas, if we can't be original on this and get a song (or several songs) with some base that would get the crowd and the team jumping, then we should be ashamed. There is too much good stuff out there.

The chorus of this song is an incredible sign along opportunity, And it would only take one time through for people to pick up on it. Plus, if are any DKM fans in the crowd, they know when to shout "HEY" at the right moments. Also we could play "Which Side Are You On?" to the Corpies and those who refuse to wear the colors to the games.

Jump On It seems to be a pretty cool song. We sit across from the student section and from what I've seen they like it.
I'm Alright I think is great. Put the Gopher dancing on the big screen and watch everyone else do the little dance along. That would be hilarious.
I don't know if anyone else does it but what about Hey Baby? Everyone could sing along to that one, "Heeeeeeeyyyyyyy Heeeeeyyyy Baby, I want to know if you'll be my girl" You could even do a MN spin and play the GB Leighton version.
Stay away from the country and the typical hard rock songs like Welcome to the Jungle and Thunderstruck that so many other colleges do already. Too played out.

I know Wisconsin does it....or has done it at their home games. Reason enough to stay away from that one IMO.

forgive me if these have already been mentioned.
du hast, by rammstein (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Hpk0G1c4P5I) this song really gets the juices flowing.
perhaps to keep the oldies happy carl orff carmina burana (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C0i9uWNDvDg) the way the vocal builds sends a chill down the spine.

Whenever one of our Gophers hits an opponent so hard that it rips the helmet off that opponent, we all join in on "Wild Thing, I Think I Love You".

AC/DC Thunderstruck opening...but instead of "Thunder" substitute "Gopher".
Pretty cheesy, but hey, why not?

ditt1605,
I'm not sure if you know this or not but there is a drinking game called Thunderstruck. (Basically you stand in a circle and one person starts drinking on the first "Thunder" and every time the song says "Thunder" the next person drinks.) Now if the powers that be are know this I doubt they would place it(even though it would be sweet to 50000(less those underage) playing Thunderstruck.). Not that I would be against this, heck I enjoy a little ACDC every once in a while. I just wouldn't get your hopes up.
If they know this and still play the song they are pricks and just rubbing salt in a wound.

Stronger by Kanye West? It is a very weak song and 3 quarters of the audience is asking what is this garbage? Either go for a real strong, hard driving song, or for one that is totally audience participation. I agree that my suggestion is obscure, but at least the audience can sing the chorus once they learn it. The is nothing singable about computer generated voices. I maybe wrong but what would the goal to be? Siting around listening? or the crowd getting loud and vocal?
Someone explain it to me.

Stand! This works on about 6 different levels. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ttbtLi_E5M8
"Stand
In the end you'll still be you
One that's done all the things you set out to do
Stand
There's a cross for you to bear
Things to go through if you're going anywhere
Stand
For the things you know are right
It s the truth that the truth makes them so uptight
Stand
All the things you want are real
You have you to complete and there is no deal
Stand. stand, stand
Stand. stand, stand!
Stand
You've been sitting much too long
There's a permanent crease in your right and wrong
Stand
There's a midget standing tall
And a giant beside him about to fall
Stand. stand, stand
Stand. stand, stand!
Stand
They will try to make you crawl
If they know what you're saying makes sense at all
Stand
Don't you know that you are free
Well at least in your mind if you want to be
Everybody
Stand, stand, stand!
Then the crazy jump-around riff that just goes on, and on....

Maybe we could get an Ed McMahon soundbite saying "Heyoooooooooooooooooooo"
every time Hayo Carpenter catches a TD pass. Or "Yessssssssssss............heh heh heh" when he catches a pass.
That would be kind of funny.

Translation from German: Du= you
Du hast= you hate
Du hast Mich= you hate me.
If you play ball out of hate two things happen: 1. You get hurt 2. Someone else gets hurt. Neither result is the point of the game. Pain is not the point of the game, contact is part of the game. It is a bad a thing to confuse them. I played in college with a guy who didn't know the difference, and both he and a guy from Michigan Tech paid the price. He hit the guy way late and broke his leg. The guy I knew blew out his knee on the play. It wasn't cool, and I still think about it sometimes.

Massive Peter Griffin on scoreboard.....and Bird is the Word cranked
I love this idea...except for the Peter Griffin part. (That episode is, I think, the last time I've laughed while watching that show in the last 3 years). I was actually going to suggest that earlier, but the weird connotations when Iowa is in town sort of killed the idea. But the kids would love it, people would move around, and bonus, the Trashmen were a local band. Outside of a lot of Atmosphere's catalog, that's my favorite piece of music to come out of Minnesota.

this song was released a while ago (1997), the lyrics are:
Du
Du hasst/hast
Du hasst/hast mich
which is:
You
You hate/have
You hate/have me
it is an intentional pun on the very similar words that have opposite meanings. If you listen to the pronunciation of hast, he clearly places the second S in it. Hate is actually spelled with a letter that my keyboard doesn't have. In interviews the band has said it's a rip on German wedding vows, and it is meant to be written as have me, but was spoken as hate me. The idea that all long term relationships turn from love to hate. Not exactly a ray of sunshine. The real question is would the "U" pump up the volume on a German death metal song if it was about even if it was about Gophers scoring many touchdowns? I'm still very afraid of it being Coke's latest ad campaign. I wish someone could end that worry. I'm also curious about if and how they are going to remind the fans and the world of the 6 National Championships that were won at our last on campus site. I think family members of players on each team that won one, should hold flags with the years on them in the gauntlet the players run though. remind them of the rich tradition and heritage they now represent. I think I will post that on a new thread and see what people think.

I din't know anything about the song, I was just responding based on my limited knowledge of German. ß is the letter used in place of double s in German.

I thought we should have played "O Fortuna" at the end of the last game at the Metrodome. This line always resonated with me after the various losses there:
Monstrous, senseless Fate -- you are a turning wheel.

did you copy and paste the letter? I wish I had thought of it. I only know the story cause an old roommate of mine, was in to them big time and we ended up talking about it ad nasium. I figured it was a chance to bore you all as I was once bored. lol. I am sorry. I hope somebody on staff in the department is really thinking this through...there is only one chance to get this right.

How about "Three Coins In A Fountain" (from Planes Trains and Automobiles)? Seriously, I love Minnie the Moocher, also known as the Hidey HO Song!
