Courier Journal: Pitinos first father/son in same NCAA Tournament

Richard Pitino already had a big Selection Sunday: The young Minnesota coach guided his Golden Gophers to their first NCAA Tournament bid in his tenure there. It's also his first trip to the Big Dance as a head coach.

But the NCAA announced moments later that Richard Pitino and his father, Louisville coach Rick Pitino, became the first father-son duo to coach teams in the same NCAA Tournament.

John Thompson Jr. and John Thompson III, who have both coached at Georgetown, have been to the NCAA Tournament on separate occasions. So have Homer, Bryce and Scott Drew; Eddie and Scott Sutton; and Dick and Tony Bennett.

Minnesota, given a No. 5 seed in the South Region, will open against 12th-seeded Middle Tennessee State in Milwaukee on Thursday. The Golden Gophers (24-9) finished fourth in the Big Ten.

Louisville, a No. 2 seed in the Midwest Region, plays Friday against 15th-seeded Jacksonville State in Indianapolis.
