View Full Version : Yankees and pitcher contracts

It's ridiculous to see what the Yankees are up to in these past couple days. Last year, I thought the Mets gave Johan Santana a contract that was excessive; the 7 year, 160 million that the Yankees are giving to 27 year old, tipping the scales C.C. Sabathia is downright ridiculous. Yes, Sabathia has had a stellar career, but he's not exactly svelte, he has struggled mightily in the playoffs, and he seems to be the sensitive type (recall the struggles he had with Cleveland early this season, much of it due to the distraction of his contract status). Overweight, struggles in playoffs, and can be sensitive-sounds like a perfect recipe for the Bronx!

Then, to top that, tonight I see they've just offered a guaranteed 5 years to A.J. Burnett, a great talent who is also injury-prone, can be very inconsistent, has thrown his teammates under the bus (blaming his defense for losing a game, I recall), and burned bridges when he left Florida. Injury prone and with a big mouth-should also play well in N.Y. Ohh, and he'll turn 32 on January 3rd.

ESPN reports that Burnett's agent was seeking a similar amount of years and money to Carlos Zambrano-the Yanks have already offered the years, so let's guess they're in the ballpark with the money (91.5 million). If that's the case, the Yankees have just offered a total of 12 years and 250 million dollars to two talented pitchers with a whole lot of red flags. My goodness, the Yankees live on a different planet than the rest of MLB (with the Red Sox). And the next time I hear some east coast talking head tell us how hard a job Brian Cashman has, I will do my best to not throw up in my mouth.

MLB contracts have gone from outrageous to obscene...and stupid fans like us keep paying them.

It's ridiculous that Burnett is going after Zambrano-money, and that the Yankees are actually giving it to him. Zambrano is better in every aspect (except for emotional control). This just drives up the value of all players, putting small-market teams at an even greater disadvantage.

I don't like wishing injuries or failures on players, but it's hard for me not to hope the Yankees free agent signings go the way of Carl Pavano. I feel bad for wanting that, but I can't help it.
