Emphasizing that he’s not throwing his players under the bus, Gophers basketball coach Richard Pitino stressed Friday that he needs more from his players late in tight games.

The Gophers (15-7, 3-6 Big Ten) have lost their past five games, dampening their NCAA tournament hopes. Each of the past four losses has been decided by Minnesota mistakes in the final minutes, causing Pitino to say in his radio show Monday that players were “hijacking themselves in the game.”

On the eve of a Saturday matinee at Illinois (13-10, 3-7), Pitino expanded on the comments.

“It’s not as complex as we all make it out to be,” he said. “If you make a mistake on defense, don’t do it again. Do it better. Help each other out. Philosophically it’s not as deep as we’re all making it out to be.

“You look at the Maryland game, we had a tough turnover, then it was a one-point game and we didn’t get the rebound. I don’t know if philosophically, there’s a whole lot else. Go get the rebound. That’s really what it comes down to. Go make that winning play. We’ve been close. Now hopefully we break through soon.”
