A season ago, the Gophers men’s basketball team compounded an embarrassing on-court product with off-court scandals that combined to yield one of the most disappointing seasons in program history.

They had twice as many players suspended as wins in the Big Ten.

With the program desperate for a facelift, coach Richard Pitino gathered his players over the summer and put together a program he called “Gopher pride”, which included weekly meetings with public speakers on topics ranging from sexual education to landing a job after graduation.

“We really worked hard,” Pitino said. “We looked ourselves in the mirror. We didn’t sit there and say, ‘Nope, nothing is wrong.’ We reflected and said, ‘What do we need to do better?’ ”

So far this season, it’s been all good news for the Gophers. They have kept the focus on the court, where they’ve won 12 of 13 games, and avoided any public scandals, which plagued the program last season.
