Seven players hit double figures as the fifth-ranked Maryland women’s basketball team blew past Bluefield State, 146-17, Wednesday night at the XFINITY Center in the Terrapins’ first exhibition match of the year.

Freshman Blair Watson led the way with 29 points, including five three-pointers, with 10 rebounds, six assists and four steals. Ieshia Small and Shatori Walker-Kimbrough added seven points apiece and freshman Jenna Staiti scored 17 with eight boards.

Brionna Jones notched 11 points, while Kristen Confroy and freshman Sarah Myers each added 10. Freshman Destiny Slocum added nine points with nine assists.

“I thought tonight was a good tune up for us,” head coach Brenda Frese said. “We have so many new players between our freshmen and Ieshia Small. We played with a lot of enthusiasm and played really hard. A lot of great things and we got rid of those jitters.”

A 40 minute intersquad scrimmage would have been a better tune-up.

I suppose we should note that Maryland upped the offense in their second exhibition-a 153-27 win over Mary Baldwin.

The fifth-ranked Maryland women’s basketball team overpowered Mary Baldwin, 153-27, Sunday at the XFINITY Center in the Terrapins’ final preseason exhibition matchup.

Nine Terrapins scored in double figures, led by freshman Jenna Staiti with 25 points and eight rebounds. Freshman Kaila Charles added 18 points, while Shatori Walker-Kimbrough, Kiah Gillespie and freshman Blair Watson each scored 17.

“I think that these exhibitions give our kids the experience of a game day more so than a closed scrimmage,” head coach Brenda Frese.

Bring back Athletes in Action. This is absurd.
