Decided to head out to Hazeltine today since I got some freebies at the last minute because a buddy couldn't go. Anyways, had the opportunity to follow the Tiger/Harrington/Beem group for about 6 holes. I think it was #15 a par 5 where Harrington put his drive in a fairway bunker. He pulls out a what I assume was a 3 wood (it wasn't an iron) and puts it on the green from 300+ yards out with an uphill, slightly awkward lie.

and before everyone starts in on me, i am a huge barry bonds fan and i remember seeing the media judging bonds based on no more evidence than his enlarged physique and head size. they would say something about him being a scrawny lead off man (which he wasn't) when he entered the league, and look at him now. use those same criteria for tiger and the obvious question is raised. gary player said "i know there are golfers who are doing something, wether its HGH creatine or steroids, i know for a FACT that some players are doing it" (emphasis mine).

I disagree about Tiger. His head size has not gotten bigger. People naturally get bigger when they work out a lot. I'm guessing that first picture was probably 10-15 years (at least) before the first one. I think it's pretty fair to say he could easily have gotten that much bigger over that time naturally. I question Phil. He seems to have gotten a lot bigger a lot more quickly.

What would steroids accomplish in golf anyway? All these guys can hit it a mile. If it's not straight, it doesn't matter. If you know anything about golf, you know all the scoring comes in the short game and with precision; it has almost nothing to do with just length.

If you are trying to win long drive competitions, steroids may be effective. For a pro golfer, I'd almost think steroids would be counterproductive. You've spent your whole life working on a swing and figuring out exactly how far you hit each club, how would a steroid improve that? Really? Would steroids really improve one's short game and putting?

On top of that, golf is all about honesty and these guys take that seriously. There is no way a competitor like Tiger Woods would be satisfied with results based on cheating. That's my opinion on this matter.

There might be a guy or two doing something, but I hardly think steroids are a problem on tour, especially with the best players.

As far as Mickelson, yeah, he looks stronger, but it's not like he is some bodybuilder. I think most professionals could do what he did with a trainer and some tighter shirts. That's another thing, fashion has changed. All these guys, esp. the young ones, wear tight skinny clothing now to show off that they are in shape and probably to look good for the young ladies. Plenty of guys in the past probably looked like that, but they didn't wear clothes to accentuate it.

Those are the drugs common on the tour.

While the added strength might not be too big of a deal, steroids can help your body hold up longer, which could help these guys not wear down over a long year or just a long tournament.

That being said, I don't think juicing is or will be a problem on the tour.

Who cares if golfers use steroids? It's not as if they're real athletes competing in a real sport.
