Minnesota (6-2) hosts the New Mexico Lobos (6-3). The Lobos are led by Benilde graduate, senior Khadijah Shumpert. Shumpert averages 14.1 points and 6.9 rebounds per game. In New Mexico’s last win versus Pepperdine (60-52) Shumpert scored 22 points and snatched 8 rebounds in 22 minutes. Yes, she is foul prone and has fouled out of two games thus far.

The Lobos and Gophers last met in November 2005 in Albuquerque with the Lobos winning 62-44. The previous season, in Minneapolis, the Gophers romped over the 23rd ranked New Mexico 75-35.

New Mexico wins: Houston Baptist, Sacramento State, Nicholls State, Southern Utah, SMU and Pepperdine.
New Mexico losses: New Mexico State, Duquesne, UTEP.

On last night’s coaches show, Stollings said Carlie Wagner played the last game with a sinus infection and was taking antibiotics.

That sure was an embarrassingly dispirited outing. The Gophers watched the Lobos offense score and rebound while the Gopher offense (Banham and Wagner) missed shots from everywhere (Carlie’s pull up jumper was particularly off). Rachel finished 6-20 (2-13 from three) and Carlie was 6-23. It looked even worse. Banham scored 22 and Wagner 16.

Khadijah Shumpert was the best player on the court. Shumpert scored 27 points and from time to time guarded Banham. That should’ve been a foul waiting to happen; but Rachel couldn’t make it happen. In fact, Rachel seemed flustered all night by having a big guard her. The Gophers rotated Hedstrom, Barnes and Edwards; but they only made me want Rangie Bessard back.

In the second half, New Mexico outscored Minnesota 37-22. Early in the third quarter, Minnesota ran the lob to Banham perfectly and then Rachel missed the open layup. In the fourth quarter a nifty pass found Wagner all alone under the bucket. Carlie missed the layup, got the rebound, missed the put back; but was fouled and then missed the two free throws. Other than Bailey (9 points) that was pretty much the offense.

To sum up: Lots of animation from the Gopher coaching staff…

Minutes Played/Starters:

39 Mullaney*
39 Bailey*
38 Wagner*
36 Banham*
23 Hedstrom*
14 Edwards
11 Barnes

One note: I did see Motherwell tell Johnson to take a shot during warm-up. Kynadi knocked down a baseline 15 footer. I have no idea if she's getting near ready to play.

They really were killed on the boards. Stollings stubordness y going small will deny Banham from reaching the dance. Get the highlow post going with Barns and Edwards or the ladies will finish under .500 in the B1G.
