MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) ― Some Gopher fans counted on bringing portable cushions with back support for more comfort. Now, they're finding out those type of cushions aren't allowed at TCF Bank Stadium and one season ticket holder was shocked to find out he had to pay the price to rent one instead.

"Our seats are in that section 145. The very first bleacher seats," said Gopher football season ticket holder Trevor Paulson.

Paulson chose bleacher seats because the only maroon and gold seats available, which have back support, were much farther from the field.

And JFK was asassinated....and we landed a man on the moon.

If people brought their own there may be size conflicts and people taking up too much space on the bleachers. Renting proper ones is the way to go.

Be Happy You Have That Option

I have no sympathy if he had a chance at a seat-back, and declined.

That said - either rent a seatback, OR DON'T BITCH !

We are on the verge of moving into a new stadium, no whining!

There are plenty of folks who would jump at the chance to have season tix, and the chance to "have to" rent a seatback.

P.S. Does that Darcy Pohland go LOOKING for negative stories about TCF ?!?!?! Sheesh.

Quote from this stupid, stupid non-story (read your information next time people. having to rent seatbacks has always been the case).

"Going there was going to be just a great time and thrill, but, like I said, it was a real surprise that we're getting stuck having to either lease them or go without," said Paulson.

seriously?! it "was" going to be a great time, but all of the sudden now it is not?! what a tool if you are no longer "expecting" to have a great time at the games because you have to rent your seatbacks (which you were informed of before buying tickets) JUST LIKE EVERYONE ELSE!

man, the f-ing lame ass whiners in this state (first the original alcohol policy that was in place, now seatbacks) piss me off to no ends sometimes! grow a f-ing pair and don't go crying to lame media personality types like darcy pohland, etc. everytime you perceive something that is unfair!

darcy pohland - i know you claim to be a "gopher fan through and through", but your strange, unnecessary and often misinformed stories on the gophers and tcf stadium seriously suck-ass.

I will vouch for Darcy having season tickets, she sat in our section last year and stayed until the end of every game. I do admit though that some of her stories are head scratchers...

seat backs

i think the legislature should get involved...seat backs for everyone or nobody...we need to be the same for everyone like a true socialist state. :0

The best part of this non-story

was the dramatic headline HAVE TO PAY and the oh by the way, this is the norm at college football stadiums.
A waste of ink.

Go Gophers!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Trevor Paulson

Has to be a complete moron. Other than it being clearly stated in the last mailing that you could rent seat backs, where does this guy think he was going to be allowed to bring in his own seat back?
Does he not understand that if everyone was allowed to bring in their own seatbacks that is a distinct possibility that not all portable seatbacks are created the same? Just imagine the hassel and potential for agruments if people were bringing in and installing their own seatbacks on gameday.
Now, I sure hope WCCO approached him and he didn't approach WCCO for this story. Get a life dude. If you are that young and cannot fathom sitting for 3 hours without supporting your back you have a lot more problems than portable seatbacks. Lose some weight, do some situps, get into shape.
In the end I am sure there are a few people rolling around in wheelchairs that would love to be able to have the choice of sitting down without their chair OR for the need of a seatback.

True that. I'm just glad I actually get to sit somewhat in the student section now. In The Dump they always f-ing placed me opposite corner of the students..... Damn talk about rough last yr for the Hogeye game.....

I think this story is stupid. But its worth remembering that Maturi admitted that the U screwed this up. The Gopher Points website FAQ and all subsequent communications made it clear that rental seatbacks were the only option. But the 3rd Gopher Points packet (which was the primary communication on the subject) was not and that's what Paulson was referring to. That doesn't change the fact the story blows the whole thing WAY out of proportion. The whole story is based on one ticket holder's experience. 1 out of 27,000 bleacher seat season ticket holders. Definitely a balanced take.

regarding cushions

A couple of years ago already I bought two cushions that had a kind of zippered front that would hang down where you could store your program, sunglasses, soda, etc. in anticipation of the new digs. There was no back involved since we're in seats with backs. Now I understand we can't bring them in either, at least that's what I heard. I don't know if it's some security thing or not. It's no big deal, but I really don't see what the problem with those would be. They're no harder for security to deal with than a woman's purse.

Seat cushions and blankets are allowed. Seat backs are not. With that in mind, if your item is a seat cushion (all soft) with no seatback, what makes you think you wouldn't be able to bring it?

Ignorance is bliss. God forbid people figure things out for themselves beforehand. Like that blowhard Tom Barnard pissing and moaning this morning because tailgating wasn't going to be allowed at TCF. Dummy.

Seriously? He was babbling about that? The stupid...it burns...

They were going over the list of "party schools", he pointed out that the U wouldn't be on the list because there was no alcohol in the stadium and no tailgating was allowed. Somebody else told him that booze wasn't sold in any Big Ten stadium, but they never said tailgating was going to be widely allowed.

F'em

No matter what is done, some people will bitch and make stuff up to make themselves seem more important. I say f'em and move on.

And what gets me even more is that this Trevor guy actually had the option of getting a chairback but decided it was further from the field. Obviously a seatback is a huge make or break for the guy so why didn't he select a seat back? I had the exact same option as this guy but also decided on chairbacks full well knowing I would purchase them if they were not overly expensive.

These people do not realize how well we are going to have it this year over the past 25 years. I bet this Trevor guy is upset about the beer situation in TCF as well.

Not that I am against having to rent them, it is no big deal, I already rented my 2 for the season.

But the argument about different sizes and controversy created by trying to self install doesn't hold much weight IMO. We have carried them into Lambeau every year for about the last decade, and it is never a problem, they also rent them there on a game by game basis if you want that option. Maybe they are afraid of them becoming projectiles or something, but most likely it is about $$.

It is a bit of a pain in the a@& to carry them around for 5 hours before the games over there, so it is worth the few bucks a game not to have to haul it around.

It was my understanding that only seat backs wouldn't be allowed. I haven't heard anything about seat cushions not being allowed in. Because of the metal benches, one would have to assume that seat cushions and blankets would be allowed.

I think the deal with the seat backs has less to do with size/space of a seat back and more with the fact that they don't want indiviuals mounting their own seat backs and possibly damaging the bench or injuring themselves via bad installment. It also helps avoid people creating and mounting their own homemade monstrosities and having the U remove them after the game/season.

I decided to email the ticket office to see if they could shed any light on the subject. (re: seat cushions and blankets)

Ugh, the Dome has made Minnesotans so ignorant when it comes to what a normal college football game is like. No one serves booze in the main seating area, and almost no one allows you to bring your own seatbacks. The bleacher spots in most stadium are pretty tight and only seats of a certain size will not spill over into your neighbors area. If everyone could bring thier own there'd be contsant fights.

Having been to several stadiums that allow them to be brought in, including Lambeau for years, I can assure you this is just a lame way for the U to cash in. If it were more reasonably priced I guess I could understand it, but they are seriously asking for about 20% more than retail for a rental. With the egg fresh on their face from the liquor situation I was surprised.

Further I will be interested to see what if any seat cushions they intend to allow into the stadium, as the verbiage of the written material has been quite vague.

That being said, I hope to be standing and screaming myself hoarse from my upper deck bleacher seat in 231 having a 'tremendous' time without one.

I forgot about the joys of blankets at outdoor football. Its been awhile since I've been to a game that required a blanket. I hope we have at least one game this year where it gets real cold and everybody brings their gopher blankets.

It has been a while since I was reminded by the heat conducting properties of aluminum, as it sucks the life out me ass-first on a near freezing night.;) At least it is a stadium and not a free standing set of bleachers up in the wind.

from the ticket office:

Thank you for your email. Seat cushions and blankets will be allowed into the TCF bank stadium. The only restrictions are the seat cushion can not have a metal frame or be too thick so that it would obstruct another person's view of the game.

So if this is the case, a seat cushion with back is allowed as long as there's no metal. That opens it up to something like this - http://www.amazon.com/dp/B001CLHWIE/ref=asc_df_B001CLHWIE867331?smid=ATVPDKIKX0DER&tag=nextag-sg-delta-20&linkCode=asn&creative=380341&creativeASIN=B001CLHWIE

meh. i would much rather use the official rental seatbacks from the u of m than than that thing from amazon. it just looks really cheap, plastic (i.e. sticky in the early fall heat/sun) and frankly uncomfortable.

based on prior experience my suggestion is that people just go for the u of m offered seatback version as it is much more sturdy, comfortable and less inclined to get sticky in early fall heat/sun.

i have never seen so much unnecessary resistance from people to spend $45 bucks on something that in the end they will wish they did!
