Busch suffers knee injury
By Marcus Fuller

Former Gophers player Travis Busch had planned on playing for Colorado State this season after transferring from Minnesota, but he suffered a major setback last week.

Busch, a former Mr. Basketball at Mounds View High School, tore his ACL during a Howard Pulley Pro City League game on Thursday in St. Paul. Surgery is scheduled for this week.

After helping the Gophers reach the NCAA tournament last season with inspired play off the bench, Busch wasn't offered a scholarship for his senior season.

Since he's pursuing a master's degree, Busch was able to petition the NCAA to allow him to play immediately for the Rams. There's still a possibility he might make it back this season, but it's a tough road. Hopefully, he returns with the ability to play at the same high intensity level that made him such a fan favorite in Minnesota.

-- There was a shortage of Gopher targets at the Best Buy Summer Classic in Bloomington, but several in-state kids showed off their talent in front of college coaches this week.

The most impressive local team was definitely the host Minnesota Pump N Run, which is led by Kevin Noreen, Dyami Starks, Carlos Emmory and Alec Brown. Emmory deserves a serious look from the Gophers, even though he's likely going to junior college. The 6-foot-6, 225-pound forward can sky like no other player currently from Minnesota besides former Cooper star Rodney Williams Jr. He's also a capable defender and rebounder at the high major Division level. He wasn't eligible to play high school ball this past season, so nobody knows much about him nationally.

-- Grassroots Canada's AAU team was on hand, but didn't have Gophers target and Findlay Prep (NV) point guard Cory Joseph, who just returned home from playing in the World Junior Championships in New Zealand. Joseph, the younger brother of Gophers guard Devoe Joseph, might be hard to land with teams such as Louisville, Arizona and Georgetown offering him scholarships.

-- Talented Hopkins freshman Riley Dearring didn't appear to be the best player by far on his Minnesota Static AAU team in the 15-and-under game I watched Tuesday, but the aggressiveness and intensity he displays on defense and slashing to the basket makes him fun to watch. Best case scenario for the 6-4, 170-pound Dearring is that he grows a few more inches, so he can play the wing in college. He already has a decent wingspan (probably 6-8 or longer).

-- Gophers coach Tubby Smith and his staff were not in attendance in Bloomington, because they chose to watch out of state tournaments this week, including one in Milwaukee. It was there that Smith watched Iowa wing Zach McCabe stroke three-pointers like crazy on Monday to score 30 points on another Minnesota target Jelan Kendrick's team. I'm hearing that performance might have landed the 6-7 McCabe an offer from Smith. Kendrick, a four-star 6-5 guard from Georgia, already has one. Also gaining more of Minnesota's attention in Milwaukee was former Iowa commit Chanse Creekmur, a 6-6 wing from Iowa. He's shooting the lights out with Net Gain, a local AAU team.

Go Gophers!!

I feel terrible for Busch... what a rough road he has had to travel.
