why is there such a lack of recruits that have committed on the defensive side of the ball? we have two defensive backs and thats all. We have solid depth at LB but to me lack depth for the future very badly at DE and DB. I know its early but i'd like to see some more defensive recruits jump on the maroon and gold train to Pasadena....

I know what you mean, I really want to see us add some quality depth on the defensive line. Right now it seems like we are loaded up at OL, and still obviously have a spot for Seantrel if he decides to be Maroon and Gold. But we need some defensive playmakers to commit. A few at each position is key to add some quality depth

As discussed in some other threads....

OL tends to be the label that is placed on anybody who plays line on both side of the ball in High school. We don't know if these guys were signed as one or the other. The coaches may not know yet, some could find out when they hit fall practice. While I would like some specialists, I am waiting and seeing. Plus, we still have a lot of scholarships open yet. It's still July.

well we still have like 15 schollies left and have already locked down our 1 QB, 2 RBs (one who many think is better at LB anyway), 4 OL and a K. That's 7 spots and I'm guessing the only other OL we take is Bobby Jackson and we'll probably take 3-4 WR/TE/Ath type of guys and maybe even an FB. That leaves at least 10 spots for the D in addition to the 2 guys we know are being recruited as DBs. Pretty even mix IMO

I can understand the angst regarding the ho-hum recruiting (perceived or otherwise), but even I, an angst-filled fan if there is one, am not overly concerned about the recruiting yet. Everybody loves flashy recruits, however flashy upper midwestern linemen recruits are hard to get (yet we have one locked and are still in play for the flashiest of them all), and plenty of non flashy under-the-radar lineman recruits have succeeded quite well at this level and the next. As I stated elsewhere I think we have a solid offensive line class and it is not even August, so we should be happy, and with luck it will get better in a big way ;) Kickers are not even really rated by most services, and thus not too flashy/sexy, yet just about any that do prognosticate on the matter say we have a top ten kicker coming in, and I have seen some horsesh#t kickers at the U in my ten years in the stands so godspeed to that maneuver and lets hope the kid is more than solid for four years.

As toward not having enough defense, in his vaunted '08 class Brewster had only swayed Maresh at this juncture of the summer (who, given his enthusiasm for the Maroon and Gold, may well have been a lock had you or I been giving the recruitment speech). Last year we saw a rival's headline: "Minnesota nearly complete on offenses?" on July 17, but lets not linger on that due to its Eric Stephens sour-taste-in-my-mouth factor and suffice to say that Brewster has come out big on offense in the past. This is fitting in Brewster's pattern of work thus far, which if you approve of his work to date should help assuage your trepidations. The man seems to thrive in the recruitment visit during the season.

Am I concerned that we don't seem to have a lot of leads on highly touted defensive backs? In a word, yes. Likewise I would be more at ease if we had a couple big name big men runstoppers ready to defend the line of scrimmage who were at least interested in giving us a weekend this fall to see what we are all about and let Brew work his mojo. We were seemingly listed in more high profile recruits' top ten or five school lists overall last year, and I hoped that the new stadium digs might be the difference maker Brewster lacked previously with those misses. Now he needs to get those high-caliber kids in the door, because I think we will have a top notch gameday experience moving forward.

That being said, I provide this quote as anecdote that Brewster welcomes a brave new world in Minnesota recruiting: "The talented prospect said that right now Georgia, Georgia Tech, Tennessee, Miami, South Carolina, Florida State, Florida and Minnesota stand out to the Warner Robins junior." [queue the music] "One of these things is not like the other one..." Referring to a rivals 4 star defensive tackle out of Georgia, it is statements like this that give me the most hope for the future and a smile on my face when I read them.

We are losing a ton of defenders to graduation after this season including 6 linemen and 5 linebackers. Still I welcome the needed attention to the offensive line, and kicking. Now saying that if another 4 star running back wants to come aboard the Gopher train, I say all aboard! If the past is any indicator we might well lose some to decommitments and academic disqualificaition, so I understand the casting of wide nets. We are hardly at a state in this program that we can afford to be turning highly recruited RBs away before Autumn regardless of the two we signed!

Another thing to think about is the speed aspect, Brew has been recruiting fast guys on the defensive side of the ball, alot from Florida, Texas, etc. These type of prospects don't have the familiarity with the U of MN like the midwest types might, thus delaying their commitments until their visits. I dunno, I thought that made sense.

As for the overall D, we have great young depth at linebacker, and DE already, as well as some good looking guys in the secondary, DT, and safety will have to be addressed, but I feel pretty good about everything so far.

first of all I believe lamonte edwards will play linebacker with a chance to be dam good

epping or leinkowtiz(i'm sure I butchered it) could very well end up on the defensive side of the ball

and what if they pretty much know that beau allen or tobi (or both) are coming here

then you have 15 more scollies.....we are about done on OL, got our qb in parish, just got a running back............we need a couple of receivers

i have no worries at all on this .........in fact I believe we will now bring in a huge number of defenders

i bet 10 of the remaining are defense

I would also like to remind everyone that at this time last year a guy named taylor lewan was somewhat unknown, and the only team to offer him at this point was minnesota, he then goes on to be a 4 star michigan lineman

the guys we have recruited have good feet and good size.......some of them may indeed move into 4 star category their senior year

Let's hope that they don't develop into 4 star michigan lineman though! :D Or more likely pull a Zags and commit to the Badgers and Illini respectively! But you are totally spot on. I seem to remember somebody on a rivals board saying that there was upwards of a 30% increase in 4 stars after senior season film, official visits and hype roll in, and a serious chunk of that is amongst linemen.

The Gophers coaches don't know that. Neither of them are close to committing anywhere.
