Confederations Cup Semi-Final

USA 2 - #1 Spain 0

Jozy Altidore's goal at 25' was the first that Spain allowed in the 4 games of the tournament.

The US showed great fight and made the most of their chances.

The USA is in their first multi-continental Cup championship. They play the winner of South Africa-Brazil Sunday at 1:30 on ESPN.

With Bradley out (he would have been out with a yellow anyways), Benny will hopefully get a well-deserved start.

Plus, Reese Davis on the highlights brought up Lou Holtz's quote:

"You don't have to be the best team in the world, you just have to be the best team in the stadium"

Great game by the defense and Tim Howard. Read the Madrid newspaper and the bbc round up of the tilt and they were quite impressed with the US athleticism and defense....Great Win! Bring on Brasil..or maybe the South Africans.

...and to think I thought this may have finally been a tennis related thread and a nice conversation about Wimbledon - sigh...

At the risk of sounding like G4L.

1.Any Miracle on Grass needs to come in the World Cup.
2. Any knoweldgeable soccer fan knows Spain constantly loses big games.
3. Any soccer tournament that features a semi with both the US and South Africa is not a huge deal.

Sorry having bad day.

Last year, people ripped Bradley for keeping his top players here for the Gold Cup (the CONCACAF championship and qualifier for the Confederations Cup), and sending his B Team to the Copa in South America.

Now the USA has a win over Spain (stopping a 15 game winning streak and a 35 game unbeaten streak), and has reached their first FIFA final.

If someone comes back from love-2 to Federer and wins, that would be a Miracle on Grass - Wimbeldon Style :D

Jorge Larrionda is an absolute joke. How he still is allowed to officiate any soccer match, much less one of this magnitude, is beyond me. He is the same ref that worked the 2006 World Cup match between Italy and the US. IIR he gave out 3 red cards in that match.

Despite that it was a great game. The center backs for the US were incredible and Howard is a stud.
