By the beginning of next season we'll probably be hearing (from Team ESPN) that Zoubek's an All-American. And then the season will start and he'll get exposed like he always does.

It's going to be an ugly year in Durham. As it stands right now, Duke has only 2 scholarship guards in Nolan Smith and Jon Scheyer. That's it...2. Losing Williams really hurts as he was expected to play 25 minutes and be the defensive whiz against the best opposing guard. Smith and Scheyer better spend the summer in Denver running 10 miles per day because they'll be expected to play 35+ minutes per game. Scheyer is one of the best conditioned players in college basketball (his oxygen intake was as high as Lance Armstrong's peak level during his prime, for whatever that's worth) but if it's somehow possible, he needs to be better conditioned.

Duke now has only 9 scholarship players (2 guards, 7 players 6'7" or taller). Missing out on Kenny Boyton and John Wall hurts, though the latter was dropped from the wishlist after his run-in with the law. Singler now will see some time at the 2, which is fine on the offensive end but he can't guard a 2 on D so expect a zone defense for long spurts. Ryan Kelly can handle the ball but is like Singler...smooth but not even close to being quick enough at guarding someone 5 inches smaller than him. Duke will try to slow the game down to a crawl and every single opponent will have the same gameplan: run, run, run, and drive, drive, drive.

As for Zoubek...he'll ride the bench. Duke will need their bigs to get back on D to clog the lane against the fast-breaking opposing guards. Zoubek can't do that. Lance Thomas, Olek Czyz, and Miles Plumlee are much more apt at it.

For what it's worth...Ryan Kelly and Mason Plumlee will both be stud freshman. They're very skilled for their size and can shoot and handle the ball, similar to Singler. However, that won't matter on defense where Duke will be completely exploited.

Expect a starting lineup of Smith, Scheyer, Kelly, Singler, and Thomas with the Plumlee bros the first 2 off the bench. That's actually a nice looking starting lineup but we all know that a team needs backups at both guard positions and Duke has neither.

If in fact Duke finishes in the top 3 of the ACC with this roster, it will be his best coaching job. College basketball is a guard's game and Duke has only 2. However, he has no one to blame but himself as he's the one managing the roster. He gets an 'F' for this offseason for failing to bring in at least 1 guard.

Things will get better in '10 when Duke brings in 2 top 50 guards in Andre Dawkins and Tyler Thornton plus Seth Curry transfers (lose Scheyer though) in but that won't help next season.

Duke is having trouble recruiting elite level 4's and 5's. The guys that can post up, rebound and get tough baskets. The past couple of years they've targeted Brandon Wright, Patrick Patterson, Drew Gordon, Greg Monroe and a host of others...all have chosen to go elsewhere. Which is why you'll continue to see Duke run even more 5 Out stuff. The fact that they can still recruit long shooters who can stretch defenses will allow them to hold serve but they'll still remain a so-so threat for national signifigance until they can land those types of players again.

Part of the reason for this is Coach K's recruiting practices when it comes to bigs. The kids and their parents have wisened up to his talk of "you'll play SF and out on the wing" which is an outright lie. K seems convinced that no one will come to man the paint for him if they aren't promised fantasies about playing on the three point line. The last time it worked was Shelden Williams and that was a long time ago in this game.

Duke

Averaged 30 W per season in the 2000's. Pretty good for a team that is having trouble recruiting.

Duke is a Final Four program. Coach K is in his longest drought without a Final Four appearence since his first 5 seasons in Durham. It should be noted that last Final Four team, in 2004, featured the Duke all-time leader in rebounding and blocked shots and I think one of only three or four ACC players to record 1500+ in both rebounding and scoring.

From 1999 to 2004 when Duke counted Elton Brand, Carlos Boozer and Sheldon Williams as manning the middle they went to 3 Final Fours, were National Champions and the Runnerup the other season. The lack of adequate post play and the inability to fill that hole since the departure of Williams has been noted by most everybody in the media and on the recruiting trail and has plagued Duke consistently come tournament time..making teams that would be normal National Title contenders into average or slightly above average tournament teams. Which is not what Duke is about under Coach K.

Factor in development issues among it's guards (in particular the PG position) and you have a distinct problems in Durham.

Duke made 2 FF in the 2000's decade. UK averages 2 FF per decade. If UK is a "FF program" then Duke meets those standards, too.

What in the holy hell does that have to do with this discussion?

Coach K can't land an elite post dominant PF or C to save his life right now. That's the discussion and one of, if not the main, reasons why they haven't returned to the Final Four in 5 (and I'll go ahead and say 6 now) seasons.

And yet, his team averages 30 W per season in the ACC (best basketball conference, year after year) and makes 2 FF (winning 1 NC) in a "down" decade of poor recruiting results...

I'm no Duke fan, but if Wisconsin can somehow beat them in the Big 10/ACC challenge I will just vomit. I can't even imagine the chest-pounding we would have to listen to.

Duke makes no sense. They're an elite program that constantly gets All American recruits but somehow they never have any depth and rarely go more than 8 deep. They rarely lose guys early to the league but when they do there is never anyone behind them. It seems they decide by a guys freshmen year whether he'll be any good or not and if they don't think so they bury him on the bench
