Shooter Now: It's basketball-mania at Howard Pulley league
By Charley Walters
Updated: 06/23/2009 11:52:49 AM CDT

The Howard Pulley pro-am summer league began another season Monday evening at the Salvation Army gym in St. Paul, and, as usual, it turned out to be a convention for basketball junkies.

Spectators included Greg Cobbs, father of incoming Gophers point guard Justin Cobbs from Torrance, Calif.; John Calcaterra, whose 6-foot-10, 235-pound son Chad of Cloquet High has been offered a tender by the Gophers; Don Zierden, the former Minnesota Lynx coach who recently accepted an assistant job with Flip Saunders' Washington Wizards and whose son, Isaiah, is a prep star at Benilde-St. Margaret's; Terry Kunze, the former Gophers standout and area coach; Errol Carlstrom and Tony Yazbeck, both of whom know every young talent who comes along; and Renee Pulley, who brings it all together.

Greg Cobbs, in town to watch Justin play in the pro-am, said the 6-2, 187-pounder from Bishop Montgomery High had verbally committed to Tim Floyd at Southern California after his sophomore season.

"But that (relationship) deteriorated, and we parted ways; it was mutual," Greg said.

Cobbs, who averaged 23.2 points last season, also considered offers from Washington, Washington State and San Diego State.

"Then (Gophers coach) Tubby (Smith) called and said, 'Why don't you come up and give us a shot?' " Greg said. "When coach Smith calls, it's kind of hard to turn him down. We came up to Minnesota out of respect for coach Smith, and him and his whole staff and the players just blew us away. They were so genuine. The chemistry on the team is great.

"And the people up here were so nice, truly nice. I know when you go on a recruiting trip, everybody's nice to you. But the people in Minnesota were sincerely nice and friendly."

Cobbs' father said it didn't hurt that the Gophers have 6-11 Ralph Sampson III and 6-10 Colton Iverson.

"Where can you go where you have 6-11 and 6-10 freshmen (now incoming sophomores), and it looks like those bigs are going to be here for at least three years?" Greg said.

Go Gophers!!

Surely our raised floor sealed the deal. It's such a recruiting tool, don't ya' know.

Why are you still talking about that? You've already pissed off everyone on this forum and yet you still post about the same crap every time. You keep making the same terrible sarcastic posts that have no point. Nobody ever said that the raised floor wins recruits so stop writing your stupid sarcastic bs.

g4l - i usually respect your opinions and find your posts at least marginally informative but this is, at best, immature and annoying.

Imagine getting a call from Dan Monson rather than Tubby! Dan who? A bit of an upgrade I would say.

Gopher4Life, we have repeatedly deleted your attempts to hijack thread after thread with raised floor comments that have nothing to do with the subject and you are clearly not getting the message and we cannot keep up with your repeated posts which absolutely detract from the conversation and topic flow. Since our deletions are not a clear enough message we are having to resort to asking you in this thread to please cease this obnoxius and annoying trend.

Thank you,

nice to see that the sheriff is taking a little stroll around town

as we like to say around these here parts: "gotta keep out the riff-raff"! ;)

GH Staff,

Or you could have chosen to notify me by private message before resorting to "obnoxius (sic) and annoying" censorship.

Gee, I guess I struck a nerve.

Thank you,

Basically, that means Floyd cooled on him or found a PG he liked better.

Good for Cobbs. Floyd is a bum. Cobbs will play for a superior coach at a better school.

>>Cobbs will play for a superior coach at a better school.<<

I agree. Better fans also and more respected conference...although he'll also be farther from home and freezing his rear off in the blizzard belt.

Your campaign against the raised floor is about as smart as complaining about the Green Monster at Fenway or the Ivy at Wrigley. You may not like it, it may even be an over-rated part of the building/stadium. But to think that it's going away any time soon because you complain about it is moronic and you're making yourself look like a fool.

How long before Cobbs is starting in front of Al?
