Despite a 3-7 conference start, Mathieu and others seem to think they have a run in them.

Perhaps the coach’s message is sinking in.

“If we can just stack wins on top of wins, we could really get this thing going,” Mathieu said. “If we continue to defend like we did today, we could definitely make a good run. A big run.”

Go Gophers!!

The defense was pretty intense and consistent Saturday. It does make a dude wonder why they haven't gotten that level of effort and intensity prior to that game.

I like Mathieu's optimism, but let's put together consecutive Big Ten wins -- or better yet win a conference road game -- before we start talking about making a big run. Have to learn how to crawl before you can walk (and run).

You think they can win a road game at Iowa, Indiana,MSU and Wisconsin?????? I,ll believe it when I see it!

Not seeing it. This group is just not that mentality tough. I just hope they can somehow salvage a NIT
run

Four words: At home against Nebraska.

Actions speak louder than words. If the team feels like they are better than 3-7, then they should prove it by putting together a big run to get to a level that they feel is indicative of their ability. Right now, they are a .300 team.

Pure and simple. Bottom line is IF you could do something than you should do it. It is only up to each individual player to execute offensively and defensively to the best of their abilities and IF this happens the team COULD (insert goal here)......

But the fact of the matter is that it has not happened (at least on a consistant basis) and until it does the losses will continue to pile up and the cloud of under achievement will continue to hang over the squad.

What would you guys rather he says? "Yeah we beat a ****ty Nebraska team that we should've beat on the road too. If we would've tried harder earlier in the year we'd be looking like a lock for the tournament. But now instead we'll just have beat Iowa and Wisconsin even though we probably won't just to have a chance."

The dude's showing some confidence that he has appeared to lack this season. Color me as one that's optimistic this is a sign he's getting his swagger back. The team needs it

I don't get this. For the most part the effort has been there all year defensively. We haven't given up, which is why we've come back from double digits in games. Nebraska is bad offensively. Makes our D look better.

My point wasn't that he said the wrong thing. It was more that I don't really care what he says, if he wants to change my opinion of him and the team, it will need to be done through on the court results.

Agreed. Of course 3-7 doesn't make anyone happy except maybe a socialist. But I am glad that the fight is still in him. If fight wasn't, he wouldn't bother with the words.

This is true. No doubt he's put in a weird situation where someone gave him a question where he felt this was the necessary response. I guess he could've gone with the Marshawn Lynch strategy :D

Until Mr. Mathieu learns to value the possession and distribute the ball without giving it to the opponents, his dream of making a run to the NCAA tourney is just that...a dream.

Keep team turnovers under 10 per game and win the rebounding stats. That will be a good start.

Seems to me the blackout really derailed his season.

Unfortunately, if they are planning on making a "big" run, they picked the worst part of the season for it. Having said that, I believe they can win "a" road game. Hard to see them winning any more than that.

Beating a much improved Purdue team at home would seem to be challenging enough right now.

Although, considering how deep in the hole we're in right now, just winning a bunch of games against schmoe teams is not going to get the job done. A big run against good teams seems to be the only way to pull the fat out of the fire here.
