Hoping that is some good foreshadowing that perhaps our main man Maxx will be back for sure in 2015. Pretty please Maxx, pretty please! At least one more season? Please! ;)

P.S. Hopefully Maxx feels he has some unfinished business with the likes of TCU, Ohio State and Wisconsin.

If Williams wins the Mackey award, he's gone.

If Williams wins the Maxwell award, he's gone.

Are you thinking of the Mackey? Maxx is a very good player, but there's no way in hell that he'd be up for the Maxwell.

Stay a Gopher Maxx! Mitch will be better! I promise! I hope!

Not very many RS sophomores leave for the draft. Also still hasn't gotten degree I don't think.

Yes. Brain fart after a very long trip home from Madison.

Maxx ain't leaving. He will after next year with degree in hand and a bigger year.

I hope that Mitch starts the off-season work outs like this:

Whew. At least we can all breath easy now knowing Mitch isn't leaving early for the NFL.

Seems like that closes the door on an open QB competition...

I don't think anyone should be surprised that Mitch will be the favorite to be the starting QB heading into next season based on his experience. That being said, I don't think the fact that he is a captain will guarantee his starting position if someone beats him out in camp. Mitch did not play well enough this season for him to be the unquestioned starter for 2015 and beyond, but at the moment he appears to be our best option until one of the other guys steps up and wins the job.

*In 2017 after Mitch has likely been the starter for one of the best if not the best 4 year stretches in modern Gopher football history, set the QB rushing TD record, and been a 2 year captain.

I seriously, honestly can't figure out why people are so down on Mitch. Hopefully when he becomes more consistent, which will happen, people will just let it go already.

They are down on Mitch because he doesn't meet their expectations of perfect. :banghead::banghead::banghead:

I was really hoping they would include a 4th captain from the special teams

I don't mind the captains they picked but was really hoping they would add a specialist like Peter Mortell to the captains list this year. 4 seems more balanced than 3 and you get a representative from all groups.

101-206 for a 49% completion percentage. 10 TD and 8 INT. Why are people down on Mitch? Because they look at this team and wonder just how good we could be if we had a truly great QB running the offense as opposed to what we are currently have. Mitch seems like a great guy but he is just an average QB. This team has gotten where it has the past two years on the strength of strong defense, special teams, and running the ball. If we could incorporate a respectable, not great, just respectable passing game into the mix to go with those other things, the sky would truly be the limit.

Again, the question shouldn't be how good ML7 is, the question should be, "is he our best option". This year he was. He most likely will be next year as well. The other "what ifs" or how good he is/isn't just don't matter in that case.

Maybe. But sometimes who is captain really doesn't matter. I doubt this means that players are now going to give those 3 more respect than Josh Campion or someone else. That said I do wonder who will be a leader on this team from an outsiders perspective. You got the feeling that guys like Thompson and Kirkwoodland were respected vets. There aren't many guys on the D left other than BBC that have had any real media presence. Murray is quiet, our 2 safeties will be seniors but I don't know if I've ever seen an interview with them or heard them speak. Campbell has been out there a bit and that's really it.

What did I say that was unhappy or offensive?

I only suggested that maybe one more player, Peter Mortell might have also been deserving of being considered a captain.
The guy had an outstanding year in 2014 and had a large impact on this seasons success, so I thought he should be recognized for that.
The players selected good captains, Leidner, Williams, and Boddy-Calhoun, In there group they must have thought that is all that is worthy. From an outsiders perspective, I thought maybe Pete Mortell was worthy of
being considered in that group. Just my opinion, not a shot at anyone or against the team. Punters
are not usually up for such roles, but on rare ocassions you might consider someone that is a specialist like a long snappr or a punter, like Mortell "Worthy" of being called a captain.

Perhaps you are underestimating the value of leadership at the QB position. I know the average fan can only see the box score to judge a player's value, but I think from what I've seen the previous three JK years I believe we were 8-4 because of him and would have had a worse record without him.

I agree with everything written here, but we should also shift the questions/blame from Mitch Leidner to "our passing game." I don't have delusions of Mitch being an elite passer, but I would be willing to wager that he had the worst weapons at the WR position in the conference. Defections/dismissals have led our passing game to lag behind the rest of the program. Mitch hasn't produced at an elite level, but we will probably never have an elite QB and need the entire system to work together to reach our maximum potential.

Correct. WR's been a huge problem for 2 years. Supposedly will be better next year. I sure hope so.

I don't doubt that Mitch is the best option we have at QB, the fact that is the case is more a reflection on the recruiting/development of the QB position since Kill took over. But saying he is the best option we have is not the same as saying he is playing well at the position.

There was a thread about who we would trade Mitch for in the conference to run our offense and the options were somewhat limited because there were very few running QB's in the conference this year. Take that same question and flip it around, how many Big Ten teams would ditch their current QB for Mitch? I bet that list would be very short.

I like Mitch, seems like a good guy/teammate but he still has a lot of room for improvement in the position and hopefully he takes a big step forward in the off-season because he will almost certainly be the starter next year given what we have on the roster at the position.
