One season into his Big Ten coaching career, Richard Pitino is enjoying the honeymoon phase of his relationship with the Minnesota Golden Gophers' fan base. Part of that is because of encouraging results from his first season, but most of it is a number of signs that point to even better days ahead.
Minnesota won 25 games, the highest number seen since Clem Haskins' Final Four team in 1996-97. Unfortunately, an 8-10 conference record pushed the Gophers off the bubble and into the NIT. Pitino's crew rallied to reel off five straight wins and won the tournament crown at Madison Square Garden. NIT success isn't always a harbinger of rapid momentum, but you can excuse Gopher fans for hoping that it is.
