For the life of me I can't figure out how Brian Sabean keeps his job out in San Francisco-why a team that should be in rebuilding mold spends 18 million over 2 years for 33 year old Edgar Renteria is beyond puzzling. However, the last deal we made with Sabean worked out pretty well, and the signing of Renteria opens up the possibility of the Giants trading top prospect Emmanuel Burris. I don't know anything about him, but he's young, has a solid reputation, and acquitted himself quite well in his rookie season with the Giants. Make it happen, Billy Smith!

i have been a life long giants fan and it does seem odd that they would bring an old shortstop to replace an old shortstop when the stated purpose for the giants was go young. however, sabean is one of the best GM's in baseball. sure the a.j. trade worked out bad for the giants--i loved Nathan-- also some other bad trades--ponson, edgardo alfonzo, armondo benetiz--but what long term GM hasn't, but he has been right most of the time.
he was behind the matt williams trade, keeping barry bonds and dealing williams--which at the time was controversial to the fans. but he got future mvp jeff kent, julian tavarez--who never panned out as a closer, but gave the giants some good years as a long reliever, and jose vizcaino--who was a decent infielder. and i think that keeping bonds panned out. also rob nen, ellis burks and kenny loften had some of their best years after coming to the giants
he also got jason schmidt, who was at his best with the giants and dealt him when he was used up, same with shawn estes and was known to bring in talented veterans before the deadline during the "good years" of the late 90's and early 00's and is where the giants got the reputation as an old team.
he also had the reputation of trading the giants young "talented" pitchers, who turned out to be terrible. this is how liriano and bonser were supposed to turn out.
about burriss i dont know much. he showed some stuff last season, but struggled too.

Cesar Izturis is available and comes at a reasonable price. Superb defender, has some speed, and hit pretty well last season. Don't expect any power from him, but he slashes the ball to RF a lot and is dependable in advancing runners. Former all-star, past gold glover, and not too old or injury prone.
