Go Gophers!!

Mason is 6'1" to 6'2". I think this photo puts to rest the idea that Martin might be 6'9".

I've seen Mason listed at 5'11-6'1. With his hair and the perspective of the photo I don't think it puts anything to rest. Although I do believe Josh when he posted on twitter he was closer to 6'10. I just don't think this photo proves anything at all.

It's a trick of the eye. Martin is actually standing 50 feet behind Mason.

Either that or he is standing on a pile of books. I used that trick a few time for the high school yearbook.:cool02:

So you are saying he's going to be playing some SF?

Jk- If Josh is not as tall or taller than King I will eat my hat.

I saw this photo when it was first posted and wasn't going to go there, although I knew it would be brought up.

If Martin plays any SF, that means Plan A didn't work. Josh, we need you to bulk up to bang in the B1G, oh wait..........

Uh, yeah, I suppose Mason's afro could be 8" high.

You obviously have never posed holding up a fish you caught.

I don't believe any picture of a fish held out front. I eat them first.

I've seen pictures of 20 pound crappies.

I like your perspective. I' don't doubt Josh is 6'-9", but not to concerned if he was shy of that with his strength and ups. J'son Stamper was a very good rebounder at 6'-6" and he didn't have great ups.

Very impressive performance by the 2 Gophers tonight. Nate Mason led all scorers with 29, along with a bunch of assists and pesky defense. I don't think they gave an MVP trophy but if they did, he'd get it. Set his teammates up and ran the offense in the 1st half, and then the 2nd half started looking to score ... hit 4 or 5 three pointers in the 2nd half, was great pushing the ball in transition, very good handles, I don't recall more than maybe 1 TO, and finished at the rim. He cleared space for himself for wide open jumpers a couple times with a wicked crossover. He was listed as 6'1" but I thought he looked several inches taller, and he's put on some muscle since last summer's videos. On the other hand, the announcer kept saying he looked shorter than his listed height and questioned whether he was 6 feet. Go figure.

Josh Martin had about 18 (I lost exact track in the mid teens), with 5 or 6 thunderous dunks (apparently he didn't win the pregame slam dunk contest though). The guy can flush around the basket, period. And yeah, he just might be 6'9", or else everyone else's listed height was exaggerated too. The center on his team (UCLA signee) was listed at 7'1" and Martin didn't look that much shorter. He looked comfortable handling the ball and ran the floor really well. The one thing that's going to drive people nuts about Martin is that he seems to be off balance and land on one foot every time he takes a jump shot, and he seems to like the baseline jump shot. He made one, but missed a few and always looked off balance even when he was wide open. He hung around the 3 point line a lot in the second half, when things got really sloppy (his team won 128-98). He wasn't as dominant on the glass as I thought he'd be, but on the other hand almost all of his time on the floor he was besides his 7'1" teammate, who got a ton of boards.

Martin and Mason each played about half of the 40 minute game, but their coach only put them on the floor together for the last 5 minutes. I thought they'd run some stuff together but they didn't.

The defensive effort on both sides was almost nonexistent the second half, but still, most of these guys were high D1 signees ... Gonzaga, Missouri, UCLA, USC, Washington and I'm forgetting some. Martin and Mason looked the part, were 2 of the more athletic guys on the floor, and got their points (unlike some of the guys out there) without being ball hogs.

Terrible broadcast though. The camera was at floor level, refs kept running in front of it. And some bizarre comments by the announcers ... Martin dunked hard one time and the announcer says, "it's a good thing it didn't hit him in the head and go back through the basket, because in that case it wouldn't count." LOL, they went on to debate the rule for a couple minutes.

Not to derail this thread back into a debate over height, but it would be pretty cool if Mason is now 6'3ish because then he'd truly be able to slide over to the 2. That might help with Johnson's apprehension about competing with him for playing time at the 1. And it would just make Mason that much more of a valuable addition.

Marcus seems to think they did give out a MVP and Mason did get it...

Wow, Marcus's summary sure put WanderingGopher to shame. I mean, Marcus's summary reminded us that the other recruit also played.

I know it is just twitter, but come on.

Great post! From the little film I've watched, it appears Mason is a scorer. Another poster said he reminds him a little of Dre and I can see that also. If Mason can provide points playing behind Mathieu and Dre, he'll be ahead of the learning curve. Since I first saw Martin, I've never had any concerns about him. We needed a banger in the worst way, and I have no doubt Josh with rebound and play defense as a frosh. Once again, good job on your post.

I am excited to see what mason will bring along with Hopefully an improved McNeil. Throw in squirrel and we have more options off the bench. Compared to Mav and smith last year.

In the game I saw Mason play, he didn't look to score much. That's one of the encouraging things about him is his versatility and ability to tailor to the situation.

In the highlight films of Josh we've seen him hit jumpers, and my recollection is that they were shot with good form. Maybe with him it's a matter of establishing consistent mechanics and correcting bad habits.

POLLYANNA!!!

140 characters. I don't know why you are ripping the guy.

Very nice to see that Mason can score when needed! I am getting more excited about this class!

I agree. McNeil and Morris are a step back at the 3, so I expect Coach P. and staff will continue to look furiously for another wing. If you watch film of Martin, Alex I. and Gaston, one does not belong with the others. I'd be surprised if Gaston is not redshirted. Lofton may well be our best player come 2015/2016. All and all, a good recruiting class.

Not worried about Morris' height as if he is paired with McNeil who also was considered a pg you would have a 6' scorer with a 6'3" well built guy who seems a good complimentary player. In the picture, Martin may be leaning back against the railing thus not standing tall.

Paul White of Georgetown was matched up against Martin to start the game, and first play of the game Martin moved him out of the lane and jammed off an offensive rebound. I will say that I don't see Martin playing the 3 because he's not laterally quick enough on D, or at least didn't show it last night. True that pretty much everyone (except Nate Mason) was playing some lazy D, but nothing I saw indicated that he's a 3. The guy is a power forward. An athletic power forward, but a power forward.

Michigan had a signee playing last night as well. The 7'1" UCLA center (Thomas Welsh) that was playing with Martin is going to be really good.

It seemed like Marcus was getting his info from Martin or Mason, so presumably they did give an MVP. There was no ceremony on the floor. When the game was over, everybody left and fans were wandering out on the court when the tv cameras cut out. But yeah, no mystery that if there was an MVP Mason would get it. Not going to say which former Gopher player his game reminded me of, because it would create ridiculous expectations.

Edit: Thought it was Paul White but it was some other dude that looked like him. I missed some of the player intros.
