View Full Version : Bachmann's Urban Legend

Seriously? Does she know what an "urban legend" is?
According to the Random House dictionary, an urban legend is "a modern story of obscure origin and with little or no supporting evidence that spreads spontaneously in varying forms and often has elements of humor, moralizing, or horror."

Nice of the PiPress to put the video of her comments below the article. Seeing is believing.

Once again she is a little unclear here- I agree. I think she could correctly state that what she said and intended have possibly been stretched to urban legend proportions in some quarters.

However, she would be better off to just stick with what she had been saying: she got baited and said the wrong thing- or at least something that sounded bad.

In other words, beej, she didn't really say it. Or if she did, it wasn't really her fault that she said it. She certainly didn't mean what she might have said if, in fact, that was what she said. I think....

What ever happened to the good old "Culture of Accountability". Ah yes, I miss those days.

I'm not really sure what I just said, but if I might have said what you think I said, I don't think it's my fault.

And yet she easily won. Between prop eight, and Bachman my faith in the human race and Americans in general has taken a serious blow.

Bear in mind that Bachmann has both a local media aide and a national media aide ... so she's always looking for a way to increase her national visibility.

I figure her national media aide either figures even bad visibility is better than no visibility -- or else she's got bad karma.

I was so happy to see Bachmann doing national TV appearances again. I was afraid that after becoming an national punchline for her "Hardball" appearance she might take a step back, get out of the headlines, and stop saying and doing such crazy, hilarious things.

She was not baited ... In fact once she said it, Chris Matthews asked her if she meant what she had just said .... allowing her to back away gracefully and give a different answer .... but she didn't, she said it again for the 2nd time. She's a nutcase.

The question was about Obama. When Matthews asked if she was sure about Obama being anti-america, she brought congress into the picture.

Is she trying to be Katherine Harris crazy?

I can just see it now-

Bachmann: I didn't say those things, that is an urban legend
Reporter: Are you sure? Roll the clip
Bachmann: That wasn't me
Reporter: Then who was it?
Bachmann: ...

Though thoroughly discredited, there are many articulate, coherent spokespersons for a conservative political ideology. It puzzles me why you and beej so ardently support a couple of room temp IQ folks like Bachmann and Palin.

Hey, I support a few lesser animals around here.

At least from my distance, their hearts appear to be in the right place. Principled conservatives deserve extra consideration. Plus, I'm usually for giving ladies plenty of chance to contribute. Notable exceptions would include tax & spend windbags like Clinton, Boxer, and Pelosi.

jamiche

How is Palin a principled conservative, G4? She runs the biggest welfare state in the country and with oil at $50 per barrel we'll see her coming to congress for more aid shortly. Bachmann is just a goofball who is in favor of whatever will get her in front of a camera.

I suspect what you really admire is that they want to ban abortion and they worship in a manner that comforts you.

Every president breaks promises, they are politicians after all. Just never make a statement like "read my lips, no new taxes" and you can get off just fine.

That's one of the reasons I refused to vote for either candidate.

I'm just teasing those millions who rode the emotional bandwagon for Obama, sucked in every word he said, and begged for more. They know who they are.

I have seen Obama off of a prompter. He uses verbs, adverbs, nouns, pronouns, direct objects, gerunds, etc. in the right way at the right time. After the last eight years it's still somewhat startling to have a president who can formulate a thought and articulate it in complete sentences.

Smart? I wish that were all it took. Even Jimmy Carter was very smart.

Brace yourselves for all the Obama double talk, excuses, postponement of goals, reconsideration of promises, and tax increases. I understand he's already delayed ending Bush's tax cuts on upper incomes until 2011 at the very earliest. LOL

He's smart enough to have said what foolish voters were desperate to hear, but that's about it.

If you were capable of reading between the lines you would see it's a dangling carrot to entice the current lame duck admin to craft a stimulus bill now rather than waiting. Otherwise what leverage do they have?

Tell you what, go hop in your way back machine and see if you can talk Bush into pulling his head out his arse so we don't get into this quagmire. McCain was the only one touting they could accomplish all his plans right away. Obama was quite clear he wouldn't be able to. That the current situation was going to force him to focus on the greatest impacts first. But you know, see it how you want.

If Obama were in favor of banning abortions you would be loving him up.

After the last eight years I would think that you would welcome a president who has something going on between his big ears.

These are close to unprecedented times so, yes, there will be departures from campaign rhetoric. Just chill and give the guy a chance.

Gopher4Life

Obama's preference for making it even easier to kill innocent life is only one reason why I've opposed him. Frankly, when it comes right down to it, any one elected official's personal view about abortion has seldom impacted public policy. Palin's certainly hasn't in Alaska. Neither has Bachman's in Minnesota.

I'm chilled. I'm just not willing to suck it all in as many (including voters, pundits, media, special interst groups) have done with the current Messiah.

"Smart? I wish that were all it took. Even Jimmy Carter was very smart."

My point was in reference to the insinuation that Obama's not a smart man, not towards his qualifications for the job. I've made my feelings about Obama very clear and I'm not a big fan.

I'm not a Cheney fan either, but I'm open minded enough to admit the guy's smart. I can not say the same about Bush. I just don't think the guy is very bright.

Learn before you laugh, buddy.

Rather than immediately screwing business as his campaign promised, he recoginizes now that his plan would cause the loss of jobs and worsen the economic crisis. If he wants all of his promised expenditures, all sorts of taxation will increase for all of us. Tax and spend liberals know no other way.

i never said he was not smart, i was trying to make a point that you can't make a judgment about anyone's IQ based on interactions with today's hyper-ADD media, or any other interactions with the public sphere.
the term "spoonerism" was coined for a dean of an oxford college, certainly no idiot, because of his incessant--perhaps freudian--slips of the tongue. bush's presidency has been a presidency of spoonerisms, but anyone making a judgment on "IQ" based on the way he speaks is being silly. but if it copacetic to assess intelligence based on speech, then lets level the playing field.

do i think that this makes obama stupid? no. but if this was a politician from the other side of the political, or messianic, isle--then it would be case #1.

Part of the reason that the Republican party has been marginalized (besides gross mismanagement of the country) is that there are still a few folks like you who drink the kool aid.

The country has been living beyond its means for a long time. Now we are starting the painful process of paying up. "Tax and spend liberals" is antiquated, archaic and almost quaint.
