Big Ten awards: One month makes a huge difference

We're down to just a few games left in the Big Ten regular season. Time to update the Big Ten awards. My initial awards from the Jan. 20 RTSS column also are listed. My, what a difference one month can make.

NOW...

1st Team All Big Team (5 best players)
Gary Harris (MSU) -- got out of his shooting slump in a big way last night.
Devyn Marble (Iowa) -- rock solid for the Hawkeyes.
Adreian Payne (MSU) -- screw the missed time, he hasn't missed a beat since returning form foot injury.
Terran Petteway (Nebraska) -- conference's biggest revelation.
Nik Stauskas (Michigan) -- no longer on a tear, but stays in the top 5.

1st Alternate = Yogi Ferrell, aka "Angry baby" (Indiana)

Big Ten Player of the Year
Payne -- may be the NCAA tourney's most difficult matchup with blend of size, athletic ability, and inside/outside shooting touch.

Big Ten Newcomer of the Year
Petteway -- easy choice.

Big Ten Coach of the Year
Tim Miles (Nebraska) -- win in East Lansing catapults him to the top.

Totally agree he is tough matchup.

Totally disagree he is the league's Player of the Year. He's only started six Big Ten games. In my opinion, you cannot give the Player of the Year Award to a guy that has played so little, especially when there are other very, very viable candidates (including his own teammate, who has had to step up in Payne's absence).

I believe voters are asked to take into account only the Big Ten season when casting their ballots.
