He seems to really be understanding his role and he plays well.

Beautiful 3 ball last night.

Give him another year and I think he will be solid.
 

I've always liked McNeil. If they had to make a decision today, he could be our starter at the 3 next season.

At 6'3? Your hate for Carlos Morris is reaching epic proportions. I don't see us starting a 5'9 PG, 6'2 SG, and 6'3 SF. We are undersized at the 1-3 this year and that is with Austin playing SF at 6'4. Morris is a much better option at 6'6.


I love McNeil though. I was one of the first to jump on his bandwagon earlier in the season. He doesn't hurt us, he keeps Mav on the bench, he is a good defender, and he is beginning to be a lot more aggressive on offense. Definitely a good pick up for Pitino. Other than Dre, I'm not sure we've had as solid of a freshman combo/point guard as McNeil in quite a while. Maybe Joesph?

Scout says 6'6, 247 sports says 6'5, Rivals says 6'5, ESPN says 6'6. But you have seen him play in person numerous times so I guess we should take your word for it.

And all 4 have have him listed at 175 lbs.

I've seen him play the same numbers of times you have and never once said he was better than a 3 year B1G starter Austin Hollins. I also said if they have to decide today. Ask our friends on the football side of the house, how often JUCO's signed on NSD during the Brewster era never quite made it to Dinkytown. Numerous posters and his current coach have commented on how he needs to gain strength. Even a novice such as yourself, should notice on film he doesn't have a B1G ready body.

So you are standing by your assessment that he is 6'4 170? All based on a couple of highlight videos? I love how you are now insinuating that he isn't even going to make it to campus. Where do you get all of your inside info?

The Chipola basketball roster 2013/2014 lists him at 6-4. Once again I said if they had to decide today. It would not be the first time a non-qualifier out of high school was not admitted to the U. after attending a JUCO. Did you go to the type of law school which requires it's students to do basic research? You seem quite confused on basic research vs. insider information etc.

And Colton Iverson was listed at 6'10 as a Gopher, despite being a legit 7 feet. He wanted to be listed as shorter so opponents would underestimate him. Maybe Morris is doing the same

So what sort of research did you do that led you to believe Morris may not attend the U despite the fact he has already signed to do so? I haven't heard anything to suggest that may happen. Seriously, what did Morris ever do to warrant this kind of hatred? This is getting to be worse than GW's hatred of Mbakwe.

Questioning whether a lightly recruited player can play in the B1G is hardly hatred and a fitting topic for a fan board. Saying he is better than a 3 year B1G starter is also not hatred, it's stupidity.

Ideally McNeil would come off the bench next year. I think that'd be best for our rotation.

Sometimes with JUCO guys, they're viewed as backup options to high school recruits in the early signing period. There's no telling how highly recruited he'd be if he waited it out, but Pitino was in early on him. Weather or not he pans out is all speculative at this point.
 



Wouldn't be surprised if we saw significant minutes with Joey/Oto playing the 3/4 when Martin is on the court (if his handles are as we are being led to believe). We would be slow and big at the 3 but much quicker at the 4... Would expect a lot of zone in those lineups due to matchup problems vs quicker 3s.

You would all be better served to ignore Howie. Agree or disagree with his statements, just ignore.
 

So uh back to McNeil....He's really played a lot better than I thought he would. Down the road if he can keep improving he could be the perfect 2 guard for us. The great thing about this staff is you can see already they do a great job of developing talent. Something that was really missing in previous years.
 

Next as of right now will be starting at the 3.. I laugh at oh he is only 6'3.. so we are not starting guys based on size lol put the best guys on the floor. Lineup if we do not sign any other players is...

My favorite parts of his game are his ability to finish at the rim through contact, he's a thick kid, and his potential upside as a physical defender.
 

McNeil doesn't have the "deer in headlights" look in his eyes and seems to be pretty fearless for a FR. He should be a solid 4-year contributor.
 

McNeil reminds me of a more advanced version of Justin Cobbs as a freshman. I think he is a solid option to start at the 3 next year if we want to go small.

Wasn't there a certain "inside" group of individuals who said that Mcneil was just brought in to fill space with his schollie, and had no right to ever see the court, let alone play in the big ten? When I heard that I thought that was ludacris, since why would Rich ever bring in a 4 year guy he didn't at least feel somewhat promising about. Even if Mcneil simply is a solid defender for the next 3 years, and plays hard he will be worth his scholarship. Every team needs accountable role players like that.

Really I think it was just some individuals upset by Tubby leaving, and Rich being seen as handed the job due to his dad.

That was the consensus on here in the non-conference. I took a lot of heat during that stretch because I liked his game and predicted he'd be a regular part of the rotation, replacing Mav. McNeil had a lot of nice offers and was a good get for us. I'm not sure he'll ever be a Dre Hollins type of player for us but he'll be a good all around combo guard that could turn into a defensive specialist.
 

I think both McNeil and Morris will be solid pieces for us, if Morris is a good defender and has good length and we can bring in a shooter to compliment him at the wing than I think we will be set

Agreed, neither will need to be go-to players for us. Our top 3 offensive weapons will probably be Dre, Dre, and Mo. Martin could end up being a decent option for us as well.
 

I really like how solid McNeil has been and as someone said earlier seems to play with a confidence that is rare for a Freshman. I also like how big he seems to play for his size and seems to like to work down low which is also a rare thing for a Gopher guard.

I watched him closely when he was in there, and I was very impressed. He seems to have a great feel for the game as well as a good understanding of the offensive and defensive schemes. He always made the right decision out there. More importantly, when he (and Buggs) came in, the game turned. He brought scrap and defense to the game. It was like he was sent in to show some other players how it's done.
 

McNeil is effective and only going to get better. I don't see why you guys feel our incoming recruits are only mediocre? Based on the guys Pitino recruited off the scrap heap at the last minute, don't you think he can evaluate and develop talent? We will be clearly better next year!

I agree 100%. Their ability to not only identify talent, but also identify area's that need improvement in the team and close the gaps has been impressive. If we can get tangible postseason experience this year, next year could be special.
 

I don't think that's been decided yet, as to whether we will be clearly better next season. The next 2 signings are very important, not only for next year, but the year after when we lose 5 seniors. It's way too early to grade him on his ability to develop talent. Let's see what they look like when they roll out the balls next season. As I've said before, getting a player to lose 50 pounds is not repeatable.

Not true. Pitino gave credit to the strength coach (sorry no name on my recall list) who also did it with the guy at Kentucky back in the 90's.
