Lou Nanne to lead University of Minnesota Athletics Facilities Campaign

Accomplished local executive and former Golden Gopher Athlete to also lead

Athletic Department volunteer leadership council

Minneapolis (December 9, 2013) -- The University of Minnesota announced today that Lou Nanne will lead the Athletic Facilities Fundraising Campaign in an effort to provide Golden Gopher student-athletes with the opportunity and tools they need to succeed in competition and later in life. The $190 million effort will fund new Gopher football and basketball practice facilities, a student-athlete academic and counseling center, nutrition and training tables, Olympic sports facilities, and other training and support needs for the University's athletic programs.

Nanne, a University of Minnesota graduate and Gopher Athletic Hall of Fame member, is also a successful sports executive and businessman, currently serving as Senior Managing Director at RBC Global Asset Management, Inc., in the Twin Cities.

In addition to the facilities campaign, Nanne will lead a new volunteer leadership council that will assist the University Athletic Department in meeting the needs of its student-athletes, coaching staffs and athletic programs on a consistent basis.

"Lou is an unbelievable leader in the community and has represented the University and state in such a way that he was an obvious choice to ask to lead this campaign and new volunteer leadership council," said Director of Athletics Norwood Teague. "We are flattered and grateful that Lou has accepted this opportunity and we look forward to working arm in arm with him in this endeavor."

"The University of Minnesota provided me with an enormous opportunity as a young student-athlete and launched me on a course that I could never have imagined when I first stepped foot on this campus," said Nanne. "I now look forward to helping this University provide that same support and opportunity to future generations of Gopher student-athletes and Minnesotans."

In this role, Nanne will work closely with the athletic department to build additional support for the University and its athletic programs among highly-influential and motivated Minnesotans.

“Lou’s tireless and passionate support for this University are widely known and respected,” said University of Minnesota President Eric Kaler. “This is further recognition of an alumnus and community leader who has continually gone above and beyond for this institution.”

There is not a set term attached to Nanne’s volunteer leadership role and it will be effective immediately.

Go Gophers!!

Great pick IMO, have loved his "Sick of this Minnesota can't do this or that culture, it's time WE went out and made it happen" attitude on KFAN lately + his business and sports connections are a major plus. Time will tell if he can get them to buy in and tap them for $$$...

Wasn't this announced a while back? Is this just the official release?

Shama posted that it might happen, this is the official release.

Nanne himself also announced it a while back on his weekly appearance on the Bumper to Bumper show on KFAN. This is just the official U announcement.

per Sid:

• The recent appointment of Lou Nanne as the lead fundraiser for the Gophers athletic department was a stroke of genius. Nobody knows more Gophers fans and the man doesn’t have an enemy in the world. On top of that, his past experience as general manager of the North Stars will come in handy when talking finances with potential donors.

Really? Nanne was on KFAN yesterday afternoon laughing about the fact that he can't get a dime out of Sid!

I heard him say the same thing on 105 Ticket with Tom B. Loved it!

Shooter Now: Lou Nanne says Gophers' $190M quest is justified

"If Northwestern can raise $200 million, why can't we raise $190 million? Every other school in the Big Ten is raising at least $200 million.

"It doesn't matter if people have gone to the University of Minnesota -- if they live in the state of Minnesota, they're affected by the University of Minnesota."

per Shooter:

That was Big Ten Commissioner Jim Delany at the Minneapolis Club on Tuesday morning for Lou Nanne's initial meeting of local business volunteers to find a way to raise $190 million for Gophers athletics facilities improvements. Nanne, a former Gophers hockey star, is heading the funding quest.

Delany impressed those at the gathering with his candor. Gophers administrators also attended.

Meanwhile, T. Denny Sanford, the multimillionaire Minnesota grad who continues to be cultivated by the Gophers as a donor, might be willing to help out for a new football practice facility. But Sanford remains adamant that he'll not be the lead financial contributor for the overall project, and he's not interested in donating for other sports.

I posted this question on the basketball forum too. Why doesn't the B1G as a conference offer its members low/no interest loans for capital facilities improvements a la the NFL with its owners? Seems to me if the conference set aside a certain percentage of its BTN revenues (or other TV deals) to help its schools in the facilities arms race it would improve the B1G as an entity, improve the quality of the competition relative to other conferences, and make the Network all that more valuable. If the U could get an advance from the conference in terms of a loan, they could get shovels in the ground far more quickly than having to raise a good chunk of it through fundraising.

Fantastic choice! Louie is connected x 10, loves the U and can deliver some big bopper's $$. That being said, I think that they need to reach out to ALL alumni and ask for some $. I cannot give a large amount of money, but I would definitely give some cash to this cause.

SKI U MAH!!!

Teague starts fundraising

Gophers athletic director Norwood Teague brought Big Ten Commissioner Jim Delany to town Monday night. Delany met with one potential group of contributors to the Gophers program for dinner on Monday, then met with another group for breakfast the next day. Delany sold some boosters on writing checks to make improvements to campus athletic facilities.

“Oh yeah, we’ve definitely raised some money,” said Teague, trying to raise $190 million for facilities upgrades. “We’re in, as they say, the silent phase right now. We plan to kick things off after the first of the year in January or February in an official way. The response has been good and I’m really happy about where we are and where we’re going.”

"...during the 60 minute conversation, Delany only mentioned Ohio State and Michigan 21 times...'they are so great!' remarked Delany..."

per Sid:

• Gophers athletic director Norwood Teague has put together two groups of Gophers fans to help raise money and do other things to aid the athletic department in its fundraising efforts. Lou Nanne is leading a 12-person effort in fundraising for Teague’s $190 million facilities upgrade plan, and there is another group of 44 also active in helping Teague.

Teague just said on KFAN that they have recieved multiple very nice commitments (wording may have been different) but aren't ready to unveil them yet...interesting

Half listening...Was there something about the potential for a "big one" that could change things (timeline)?

The thread discussing Norwood leaving the U is locked.....LoL!! Guys, this is not new news internally. Norwood has been looking for a new job for a few months now. The President has openly contemplated hiring a VP over Norwood to help the sinking ship. Norwood's facilities plan is over a year late from when he promised it, has no traction and is sinking fast. The reason they wont announce any commitments, is because they do not have any without strings attached. No one is foolish enough to ante up to a aberration of a snake oil salesman. Keep in mind the "key fund raiser" in all of this just jumped ship for a facilities job. The Norwood cast is in over their heads here at Minnesota, and they now know it. The Big Ten is a big jump from the comforts of VCU.

Maybe you should champion your inside information to Virginia Tech, because apparently their searching is going elsewhere.

But be ready for a fight! Pessimistic Bearcat fans believe the rumors, that Babcock is as good as gone. Not me though, I have faith that your insider information is the best!
