Vitale is telling them about when he was fired from coaching the Detroit Pistons — Nov. 8, 1979 — and how it may have been the best thing that ever happened to him. He figures he would have been dead long ago had he kept coaching. He took losing too hard.
It was Valvano who talked him out of getting back into the profession. His personality would be best suited for another endeavor.
