Some perspective on the profit numbers of Minnesota Basketball.

However, a close examination of the numbers can show a comparison of 09-10 Basketball PROFIT to 10-11 PROFIT.
Minnesota is 2nd in the B1G for increased dollar amount profit for Basketball from 09-10 to 10-11. Purdue is number 1 by $20,000.
In 09-10 Minnesota basketball PROFIT was $8,041,167. In 10-11 MN BB PROFIT was $9,592,063. This is a $1,550,896 increase in profit from 09-10 to 10-11.
I believe this was before the B1G announced the increased revenues coming from the B10 Network. It was also before the increased pricing for Basketball Season TIX went into effect.
Tough to guestimate the numbers for 11-12. Those numbers are not available that I could find. Also, the numbers for this year are still to come for 2012-2013. BUT, if MN maintains the continued PROFIT increase it saw from 09-10 to 10-11, the PROFIT from MN BB alone would be 12.5 MILLION Dollars for 2012-2013. This guestimate would not factor in increased revenue from recent higher MN ticket prices nor would it factor in increased revenue from recent B10 network revenue and the increased revenue coming from B1G expansion.
Factor in those potential revenues and it's possible Minnesota Basketball could be looking at a 13-14 MILLION Dollar PROFIT margin - per year.
Put in terms of a coaching contract and you are talking about $70 Million Profit over the life of a 5 year contract.
It seems to me this should be enough to do just about whatever you want to do to improve the Basketball Program. Also, how much would these profit numbers increase if they started to perform in the top half of the Big Ten (B1G)?
Tubby can take a lot of credit for these increased MN BB Profit numbers since he came here. He was a big time hire and he surely increased Minnesota's Basketball image when he arrived. After 5+ years now it is about time to increase the Basketball performance on the court in the Big Ten --- to match the B1G dollars available to the Minnesota Basketball program. Norwood has a few dollars to spend.
