Gophers to watch two bigs at state tourney
The state's 2010 basketball recruiting class features three prospects 6 feet 10 or taller. The Gophers will be keeping an eye on two of them at the state tournament this week at Target Center.

Sibley's Jake Kreuser and Winona's Alec Brown, both 6-11, are getting a majority of their interest from low to mid-major programs, but Minnesota coaches are keeping tabs on them.

Sibley plays Bloomington Jefferson at 2 p.m Wednesday. Winona plays St. Cloud Tech at noon.

Kreuser, who is close to 7 feet and 220 pounds, has played against better competition and is starting to fill out. I've been told he has a decent array of post moves but needs to become more physical (sounds like a poor man's Ralph Sampson III). Wisconsin and Marquette are also watching his development.

Brown jumped onto the scene this season. He has led his team to an impressive run to the state tournament. I was told he runs the floor very well. He has a nice touch around the basket and is a good shot blocker. Brown is extremely thin, but he has the mobility of a power forward. Washington State and Colorado State are reportedly paying close attention.

Right now, Kreuser and Cloquet 6-10 junior center Chad Calcaterra are more serious targets for the Gophers than Brown, but that could change.

-- Gophers coach Tubby Smith's oldest son, G.G., interviewed for the head coaching position at Smith's alma mater, High Point University in North Carolina. G.G. Smith played for his father at Georgia and is an assistant at Loyola College in Maryland.

-- Minnesota recruit and Hopkins forward Royce White starts his quest for a state title as the Royals open 10 a.m. Wednesday against Blaine at Target Center. If Hopkiins advances, it will play the Winona-St. Cloud Tech winner at 6 p.m. Thursday in the semifinals.
