The Gophers (12-3-3, 6-3-3 WCHA) opened the Mariucci Classic hockey tournament, hosting the Air Force Falcons (5-8-4, 4-4-2 AHA) tonight at Mariucci Arena in front of 10,113. Minnesota beat Air Force by a final score of 4-0, with 2 goals coming in the latter stages of the third period.

Here is what I saw.

* Gophers had their way with Air Force for the most part. It was a very physical game with the Falcons, but clean. Even a penalty on Seth Helgeson was for "spraying the goalie". Goalie just got a nice cool bit of ice shavings in the face. Refreshing.

* Tom Serratore got some rough treatment from the Falcons right off the bat. Air Force is coached by his Serratore's father, Frank. According to Frank, Tom skated with the Falcons during the Christmas break in Colorado Springs, but his Dad made him sit in his own locker room.

* Ryan Reilly got a somewhat rare opportunity to play, and made the most of it, scoring his first goal as a Gopher in the second period. He also played a high energy and physical game from start to finish, throwing his 5'7" and 168 pounds around quite a bit.

The Gophers will take on the Boston College Eagles tomorrow night at Mariucci in a rematch of last years Frozen Four semifinal. Game time is 7:00 PM (Central). The game will be broadcast on Fox Sports North.
