ESPN BracketBusters event discontinued

"BracketBusters has been a unique event for 11 years, producing memorable games and moments while generating national exposure for the participating schools and conferences," the statement said. "Given the evolving college landscape, we felt the event in its present form has run its course.

- Translation: ratings weren't high enough to justify the costs.

"The answer to all your questions is, money."

It's definitely run its course. All but maybe 5 or 6 of the BB games are virtually meaningless.

True that there are a lot of meaningless games, but a scaled down version with games that are not meaningless would have been nice for ball fans who want to see quality games outside the BCS conferences and may even score ESPN some cash with reduced production costs and higher ratings. Games that include top teams from the Colonial and Missouri Valley and WCC teams not named Gonzaga were always a treat and still would be welcome.

it was about the only way mid major's got legit home games in return.

What I'd like to see in place of Bracket Busters weekend is the quality non-BCS programs going head to head with some of the major programs. The team that hosts one year in return has to play on the other team's home floor the next season. It would guarantee that some of the "little guys" get a decent home-and-home opponent, something they rarely get. Never gonna' happen, though. Major programs will never go for it.

As a season-ticket holder, I wouldn't be averse to a February nonconference game vs. a Saint Mary's, Creighton, Davidson, Murray State, Wichita State, or another opponent of that ilk.
