Guentzel's name has come up as a possible canidate. He would make a great head coach, and would really turn that program around. Would suck to see him leave as he is a huge asset for the Gophers. But if anyone deserves the chance, it is him. Plus, it will give him head coaching experience before he takes over when Lucia steps down.

I hope he doesn't leave, I don't think we would be near as good without Coach Guentzel. We have made the tournament 12-15 seasons with Guentzel, and missed it during all 3 seasons when he left for his coaching tour through CC, Omaha, and the USHL.

per Shooter:

"Ex-Olympian John Harrington interested in Minnesota State Mankato hockey coaching vacancy."

Roman blog: Former Gophers assistant Hastings to interview for MSU Mankato job

Mike Hastings, an associate head coach with Nebraska Omaha the past three seasons, will interview today for the head men's hockey coaching position at Minnesota State Mankato with the the school's search committee.

Hastings, a Gophers assistant coach in the 2008-09 season, will then meet with the media and the general public at 4 p.m. at the Taylor Center on campus. That seems a little odd for a candidate, unless the job is nearly his already.

Roman blog: Hastings named head coach at Minnesota State Mankato

Mike Hastings has been named the new MSU Mankato men's hockey coach.

He has been coaching in the WCHA the past four seasons, serving as an assistant on Don Lucia's Gophers staff in 2008-09 and then as an associate head coach on Dean Blais' Nebraska Omaha staff the past three seasons.

Guentzel to stay at U

Mike Guentzel, who came back to the U after a three-year absence to be assistant men's hockey coach, is not interested in looking at any other head coaching job. Rumors were that he wanted the Minnesota State Mankato job, which was filled Saturday by former Gophers assistant Mike Hastings.

"I'm very happy at Minnesota and have not applied for the Mankato State job as rumored," said Guentzel, who is in New York watching his son Gabe, a former Colorado College hockey player who signed with Syracuse of the American Hockey League and was playing in a game against the Connecticut Whale.

I'm curious: What are some of your perspectives on what Hastings brings to the MSU-Mankato program? Maybe I'm just under-informed, but it seems he wasn't one of the more high profile assistants under Lucia. I love it when all the MN programs loom large on the schedule. I love hearing when Mankato downs Becky, or when Bemidji takes out NoDak.

Hoping for great success for Coach Hastings!
