i don't know how many of ya'll are cycling fans. seven-time-tour de france-winner lance armstrong is coming out of retirement to ride the tour de france next year for the ninth time.
off all the cyclists that finished on the podium with armstrong, 6 out of 8 riders have since tested positive for performance enhancing drugs. couldn't find any info on escartin in 99.
lance has never tested positive for performance enhancing drugs. but the riders he has blown out of the saddle have done everything from blood transfusions to increase red blood cells, taking EPO a synthetic red blood cell booster, and HGH to increase muscle growth and speed recovery. so perhaps armstrong really trained that much harder than all these dopers, but seeing as how they didn't have a test for epo until after armstrong retired, and it is impossible to test for homologeous blood transfusions as well as HGH maybe he just didn't get caught.
not to mention the two most famous riders to come out of u.s. postal--tyler hamilton, and floyd landis--also have been busted for doping.
will this return to cycling be good for the tarnished image of the sport--as armstrong is considered an american hero here in the us?

There are very few people in the cycling world who believe that Lance never took perfomance enhancing drugs. I have come around to the point of view that Greg Lemond was right on the money about him.

I personally blame Lance for all of you spandex wearing bikers out there. You are not training for anything, so stop trying to look like you are. None of you are on a "team" so stop it-just stop it already!!
I feel better now. :)

i love it. a post from a truly enlightened sports fan. just because someone is not training for the tour de france then they couldn't possibly be training for anything.
actually there is a thriving amateur cycling circuit in america. amateur cyclists are assessed a level of ability from cat 5 to cat 1. the school i attend, as does the university of minnesota, has a bike team with a uniform and everything. they go to races and spend time training for them. so there are plenty of "teams" out there.
i suppose that it is possible to play softball without cleats and full on baseball gear, or to shoot hoops without basketball shoes, shorts and jersey, or play hockey without any of the bells and whistles, but i still see a lot of people, who are on no team, dressed in this manner. the fact is most of these things make playing the sport easier, just like lycra makes cycling easier.
you may now return to your anheiser busch-swilling, three-sport watching life as a "sports" fan.:)

I was waiting for a spandex wearing fan to lash out..
No matter what, you look silly trying to look like Lance--no getting around that.
I prefer riding in tennis shoes and shorts.
I'm a beer snob by the way, so no anheiser busch for me.

i was like you once. riding in shorts and tennis shoes--no way this guy's gonna wear lycra. but as i continued to ride i bit the bullet and put on the "kit"--full jersey and shorts and cycling shoes. i couldn't believe the difference it made. there is nothing like cruising at 30mph without much effort, there is no way to explain it. if you ever decide to get serious about cycling you WILL wear full kit.
i have never tried to look like lance, as a matter of fact he bothers me. you will be suprised to know that there are many great american cyclists other than lance. i don't think you have ever seen me cycling either so i don't see how you think that i would look silly. as a matter of fact i think that you look silly in your tennis shoes and shorts.:p
