Song Meanings

I'm not a lyric guy. I mean I like to write them, but I rarely hang on every word in a song. I've always been one of those people singing the wrong words out loud. And so frequently I actually take some time to read a set of lyrics to songs I've always liked. Often I'm quite surprised at the lyrics.

Back in one of my former lives I had a little band and we were performing a song that I really liked the groove of. A one hit wonder song by a band called the Gun Bunnies. We played it quite a few times and since I didn't sing the song never really checked out the lyrics. One day, I thought I'd learn them to see what we could do with the background vocals. It's then that we discovered we were singing a song about masturbation. The singer had no idea either. A normal rock staple for sure, but surprising none-the-less.

So it's here that I present an opportunity for a non-political thread. It can go on with masturbation songs. Wrongly sung lyric stories such as "I am the ape man". Our pleasant lyrical surprised. Or all of the above, or none.

I was a sophomore in college when MC Hammer's "2 Legit 2 Quit" was released and quite popular in the clubs. The chorus of the song seemed a bit risque to my friends and I, but we didn't think much of it when we were three sheets to the wind. When we finally saw the video on MTV, we discovered that MC Hammer was rapping Too Legit to Quit, not "Do the Jerk, Do the Circle Jerk", which I swear was how it sounded coming through the speakers at the club.

In the Smashing Pumpkins song "Disarm" there is a line where Billy Corgan sings "Inside of me and such a part of you." For years, I thought he was saying "In sodomy and such a part of you." At the time I sort of shrugged it off because like you Schnoodler, I'm much more of a melody guy. Lyrics rarely hit me, but an epic riff or melody will every time.
