Ah, another Coulee Region kid! Troy isn't bad in football, but baseball is his best (and baseball is La Crescent's best sport). He's been polite when I've crossed paths with him.

Sioux Falls Post 15 East shortstop and O’Gorman senior Connor Schaefbauer has verbally committed to play baseball at the University of Minnesota.

Schaefbauer hit .464 with 22 doubles, six triples, 30 stolen bases and a .522 on-base percentage for East this summer. He struck out just eight times in 205 at-bats.

He also had offers from Connecticut and Jacksonville, but he chose Minnesota based on a campus visit he made in mid-September.

“It just felt like the place I needed to be,” said Schaefbauer, who also plays football and basketball at O’Gorman. “The coaching staff is great and the players are awesome, and the Big Ten is good baseball.”

Schaefbauer is confident that he can step in and make an early impact.

“I plan to compete for the starting shortstop position as a freshman,” he said. “I want to jump right into it.”
