Gary Parrish: Penn State job a dead end for careers

There is alot of talent in Pennsylvania, but there is quite a bit of competion for the talent that does exist.

PSU needs a coach who can recruit. Unfortunately, however, PSU does not have a fan base to make the basketball economy big enough to afford such a proven coach. Yet, they can go with “build it and they will come.” Expand the budget, hire a major coach, and give him a bit of time. Once rolling, they can build a fan base to justify such a hire in the long run.

Otherwise, if I am the AD, I will go with a super long term project hiring a young coach (instead of a middle aged mid-major coach just for plugging the holes) who may not have been proven yet (better if he has a strong tie to the program or familiar with the local scenes). Of course, there is a risk that he may bolt once things are improving. Either way, PSU needs to take a big risk to rebuild its basketball program.
