Mankato Free Press: Gophers football coach offers fans some straight talk

Kill's built up enough of a reputation at this point where he could do nothing for an hour but spout a bunch of Chuck Norris facts about himself and the headline writers would still go off about what a straight shooter he is.

Growing very tired of this. We've finally set a bar that lower tier bowls accomplished by going 3-5 in the conference do not buy you extra time. I hope Jerry Kill succeeds, because I want Gopher football to succeed. It doesn't take any skill to come in and say things are bad or say things are good. The same people who are writing these headlines now, or sing the praises of Kill on messageboards, will be burying him in 2-3 years if he doesn't produce.

Given the circumstances if you have another mesage he should be giving people you should give him a call. I doubt giving this message is the most fun 6 months Coach Kill has ever had either.

You mean like the OSU fans would do if they lost to Michigan and another BT foe?

Coach Kill has a huge PR problem due to a lack of success of the program. How can he create more interest in the Gophers? He has to sell himself and the program unlike the top programs. So what sets Coach Kill apart from the rest in doing "his" part to resurrect Gopher football? Others have tried and all have failed. All coach can do at this juncture is get his message out there and hope for the best.

IMO, selling a struggling program to doubting fans at this point does take a lot of skill.

I can't understand getting tired of this. It's May, and people all over the state are talking about Golden Gopher football. Aside from Holtz, Kill is the first coach that we have hired since Warmath who has a winning record as a D-I head coach. It's good that people are interested in Golden Gopher football. It's good that Golden Gopher football is getting a lot of coverage from the media. Tired of this? No, I want even more.

It's not a crime to be interested - even to be optimistic - about Golden Gopher football.

7 months.

I would agree with the complaints here if Phill Miller kept writing the same story over and over, but this is the Mankato Free Press. This is likely the first time the writer has had an opportunity to write this column. He is writing for the subscribers of the Mankato Free Press, not people like us who read every link and story about Gopher Football. Will they bury him if they don't produce?? Of course, as long as it is done professionally, I don't think we should expect/want any different.

It's not quite clear what you mean, but it appears that you are saying that people will be denouncing Kill if the Gophers do not produce this season. It's quite unlikely that his honeymoon will be that short; while there is a lot of enthusiasm for the Kill era, not many people expect a lot of wins this season.

Only among Gopher fandom could it be BAD to get positive offseason coverage.

I'm getting really tired of the "Brewster was a blowhard" BS. No one was truly bothered by the content of anything that Brewster said. They used it as an excuse to crucify him because he didn't win enough. Rex Ryan is one of the biggest blowhards in sports and espouses grand ambitions constantly - but no one cares or says anything, because he wins. Burnt Enema is one of the biggest d!cks in the coaching field in any sport at any level, but Wisconsin fans love him because he wins. From everything I've read, it seems like Warmath was kind of a jerk, but again, no one cared, because he won a national title.

No one's saying that anyone has to like Brewster. But at least be honest about why you dislike(d) him.

you and me both. seems like you can't read an article without someone bringing up how brewster had expectations and goals.

he lost. get over it. he's not the first minnesota coach to fail.

The last two posts are full of truth. I'd also love to add that Harbaugh was just like Brew in that he was bold in his statements.
