GopherHole's 4th Annual Unscientific Survey

It's time to introduce and reintroduce GopherHolers to one another through my annual unscientific survey. We have many new members as well as a large coningent of veteran posters that visit and post on the football and basketball forums. Hopefully most of you will participate in the survey. Success of the informative, fun survey is dependent upon your participation. I also hope to attract visitors from other Gopher web sites and that they'll jump in and enjoy the experience of being a GopherHoler. So, spread the word, if you're so inclined.

We have several fans of other teams that visit and positively contribute to the discourse on both forums. To visiting Boilers, Hawkeyes, Badgers, Buckeyes, etc., you're encouraged to answer the survey questions (as they relate to your school) as well. After all, you also help to make GopherHole what it is . . . a great place to share comments and gain information related to football and basketball, especially as it relates to Golden Gopher athletics.

REQUESTS: Practice the Golden Rule. Treat each other and visitors as guests and with respect; the way you'd want to be treated. Please post your comments about the survey in other threads, for the survey thread will become quite large. (228 responded in 2007 and 179 participated last year) If you have six months or less until your next birthday, please round up to your next age. And, if you're presently working toward a degree, please list the type of degree being sought.

This year's unscientific survey has three components: 1) demographics; 2) anecdotal information; and 3) site-related comments for the GopherHole Admins consideration.

Introduce our younger members to the traditions, history and legacies of Gopher athletics.

More in-depth reports and some about past sports heroes (where they are now, the successes they've enjoyed in the private/public sector since they left the playing fields, and the importance of their college experience in their professional life). What I like about GopherHole: Hearing a great amount of opinions about a gopher sports, et al. I'm sure all of (or at least the greater majority of) you guys and gals would be great to share a beer with.

What I'd like to see enhanced: A token page for recruits/parents where we give our desires for them to come to the great University of Minnesota, so like a recruiting page

Additional Comments: While I'm sure we all disagree at some point, I think that we share a common goal: getting the gophers back to Pasadena/the Final Four(without cheating). We have different ideas about how it should happen, but when the day comes, I think we will all be there to support our young men.

In addition, as a member of the marching band, I hope many on this board enjoy our shows/plaza sets/pep bands. We all love our gophers as much as you do, and we hope you like us as well as the athletic teams.

What I'd like to see enhanced: The number of people active on the board. I realize there are only so many Gopher fans who also happen to be the type to frequent message boards, but the more opinions the better. It took me a bit to find Gopherhole when I first started doing sports message boards.

Additional Comments: This site has been an AMAZING source of information about recruiting, stadium updates, insight in to the team, etc. I am excited to see it continue to grow and improve as our athletic department does.

I'd also like to shout out for the band. It can't be said enough how hard they work each week, support the team (even the ones many people don't) and ask nothing in return except people to get into it as much as they do. Keep up the good work in the new stadium!

What I like about GopherHole: Wow, well, where to start...first and foremost the amazing friends I have met through this site. I have been very fortunate to meet some people through GH that I consider lifelong friends. I also just love sharing a passion for the maroon and gold with like-minded and die-hard Gopher fans. Of course all of the game analysis, inside information, etc. and I also enjoy how often I laugh when I read posts...we have a very diverse, smart and funny community and often find myself laughing out loud at various lines, comments. Also, I have thouroughly enjoyed writing the "where are they now" series on former Gopher greats. I believe I have written between 40-50 of these through the years as I am a big Gopher history nut.

What I'd like to see enhanced: The site continues to grow and is new records for hits, views and posts each month for the past 15-16 months straight which is great. There are so many "lurkers" and I would like to see more of these lurkers become active posters as new insight and analysis is always appreciated.

I would also like to suggest a few new categories for the survery:
Best/Most fun Gopher football game I’ve attended: Minnesota vs. Wisconsin, 11/8/03, Watching Rhys sprint to grab the Axe was fantastic! Close 2nd would have to be MN vs. Purdue, 9/24/05 (Double OT Homecoming Win).
Best/Most fun Gopher basketball game I’ve attended: Minnesota vs. Wisconsin, 2/5/05, when Vincent Grier scored as many points in the 2nd half as the entire Badger team. That plus Monson’s awesome gold sport coat borrowed from a Century 21 agent. Close 2nd would have to be MN vs. Georgia, 11/30/02. My 1st Gopher game at The Barn + hearing the place at it’s loudest, rocking best + Bauer hitting a 3 to win it at the buzzer…unbelievable!

What I like about GopherHole: As someone else noted, just about everything. I like the new board format, getting away from Yuku. I like the diversity of opinions, and that (most of the time) we can express them without ripping the other person to shreds. I like Snowman's Pick Per Day. I like Hodger, our in-house bracketologist. When I was living out in Seattle, I relied on this place for 95% of my Gopher information. And maybe not so much about the Hole, but Gophers: The band. You guys rock!

What I'd like to see enhanced: On the rare occasions that arguments do get personal, be quick to put a muzzle on it. Otherwise, you're doing an excellent job!

What I like about GopherHole: Lots of excellent insight from a large number of posters. If there's news, you hear about it here first. A lot of support for the program. Interviews with coaches, players, and recruits are awesome.

What I'd like to see enhanced: Navigation scheme on the site seems quite awkward. Chat rooms would be interesting. Perhaps more formalized recruit tracking. Stronger monitoring and banning of troublemakers; there are clearly folks here that were banned from other places, and they really degrade the value and experience of the site.

What I like about GopherHole: It's a good chance to discuss Gopher sports with people that share my passion for the program(s). The stories from GopherLady are informative and the Kiese/Royce blogs are really great idea to get to know the players. I formerly worked with Robb Litt so I should probably give him a shout out for the work he does with trips down memory lane too--I really enjoyed his piece on Trent Tucker.

What I'd like to see enhanced: It would be great to see more interviews with current players and former players to get to know them on a more personal level. I've read Ray Christensen's Gopher Tales and I'm in the process of reading The Game of My Life and I really like reading about some of the history of the progam. I think small pieces about historic games would be nice to see and it helps me appreciate the current games and rivalries a little more.

What I'd like to see enhanced: Relaxation of the policy against a poster faking his own death...a resolution to the standoff between Gutter Helmet and Detlef From The Essen Haus (give us back our Slab of Bacon!)...more quality visiting fans (such as the two MN Boiler fans, UWOle, STPHawk), and not to contradict, but quicker moderator response to people whose only goal is to stir the pot (Loon, BIOV, Pantherhawk, Lakesbison, etc.).

What I like about GopherHole: Good information and a casual attitude (usually). The interviews are very much appreciated.

What I'd like to see enhanced: The degree to which the negetivity has to get before someone is banned doesn't seem strict enough to me. If someone is on here to degrade our program, that should be enough for a ban in my mind. Playing devils advocate is ok, but certain individuals take it much too far and should be removed from the site. I have seen users get banned from other teams' forums for much less than what seems to be accepted on this site.

What I like about GopherHole: I really only use the message boards. Within that, the community of Gopher supporters is my favorite part. It's great to be able to interact with folks who enjoy the "highs" and suffer through the "lows" like I do...and basically live and die Gopher sports (especially football). I also love the great recruiting discussions around that time of year and the fact that there's "news" and discussion pretty much around the year.

What I'd like to see enhanced: Nothing major. The switch to the new boards has been awesome, so thanks for that! Honestly, I'd like to see quicker identification and banning of trolls. I don't mind established posters voicing dissent--I mean, nobody's going to be 100% happy with the program 100% of the time. That said, people who show up suddenly and spew nothing but negativity in 90% of their posts have no place here...they do nothing but frustrate and antagonize.

What I like about GopherHole: The variety, magnitude, and passion people show in their opinions about the Gophers. Love the insight that Johnny Gopher, grunkie, et al bring to the table. I talk to fans at the games, but need a year-round fix and that's what GH provides. Also sick and tired of the local sports media, who don't dedicate time for the Gophers. Expect more from the local media for one of the nation's largest universities! :(

What I'd like to see enhanced: More in depth articles/posts about the players. Getting to know the players is a big part of getting fans to rally around the team. Now that we seem to be getting our MN kids to stay, I think fans will feel more attached to the team.

What I like about GopherHole: Inside information on big stories faster than the media report it; inside information on thousands of little news bits that the media ignore. Also, it's like a support group of a small, committed number of people suffering from the same, ongoing crisis. My friends just don't understand.

What I'd like to see enhanced: Gopher Lady's text messages, phone calls and e-mails to/from recruits are outstanding. It's one thing to see a recruit's "official" final five, but you learn more by listening to him talk about his offers, visits and interests. Even better than Gopher Lady's longer interviews are her quick communications with recruits to confirm or quell rumors before they get out of hand. More "reporting" like that would be welcome and hugely successful.

Additional Comments: A few posters, while not doing enough to get themselves banned, can make this a hard place to visit sometimes. Either the administrators or the community should keep an ongoing list of the people we will all agree to ignore. I think acting together in silent protest could bore them into leaving.

I have had an opportunity to meet so many great Gopher fans through this site (and trust me, die-hards are hard to find), and some have become some of my closest friends. 5 years ago, I would of had to bribe one of my friends to go to events like the Spring game, signing day, or Midnight Madness...now I actually have Gopher friends that voluntarily go to these events, and I love going with them!

What I'd like to see enhanced: I would LOVE for more people to post. Anytime I meet a someone who reads GH, I ask them if they post. Most just lurk. This board is only as good as it's posters, the more dialogue we have going, with so many different opinions, will just make us stronger. Don't be afraid to post! Trust me, once you start, it's addictive and you can't stop :) I'd also like a chat room, during away bball games, I love sitting on the couch, drinking my Diet Coke, and chatting with Gopher fans.

What I like about Gopherhole.com: I always enjoy discussing pertinent issues with other folks, whether it be in athletics or otherwise. One of the great things about the internet is the ability to freely exchange ideas and different points of view. And I enjoy this more than any other aspect of the site.

Also, GopherLady's interviews rock and are more informative than some of the drivel that is written other places.

Areas for improvement: Too many folks take things too personally sometimes, but other than that, nothing I can think of.

What I like about GopherHole: I like being linked to so many passionate gopher sports fans. The links that are provided only increase my knowledge. The varied expertise and insight is invaluable. I enjoy the interview that GL does the most.

Additional Comments: I have seen the growth in the site and it's contributors over the last couple of years. And I just hope they continue on that trend. I would like to see the gopher hole work towards a one stop site. A place where we start and finish our gopher updates. Either by providing more data, (stats ect) and or links. I would also like to see the hole take the lead in highlighting instate recruits and maintaining a list. We'd gain a great edge that way, plus it's fun to see who the good kids are and where they end up, especially if we knew about them first.

What I like about Gopher Hole: just all the information and insight about the gophers, especially the interviews with the prospects. GL rocks!!! I also like the great span of age groups on here, all of whom have a different perspective of the sports being covered.

What I'd like to see enhanced: More recruiting, designate a seperate board for football and basketball recruiting instead of it being jumbled on the big board. I also would like to see less trolling(though it would never happen), and hopefully peace between all of the posters who are gopher fans.

What I like about GopherHole: I most enjoy getting to know the folks here on the hole, and being able to read about what the most passionate fans think about everything Gopher. What I'd like to see enhanced: Some where are they now pieces on players that were fan favorites when they played for Minnesota but perhaps weren't talented enough to play at the next level. Recruiting specific sub-forums. I would be interested in some Gopher Hole merchandise (perhaps customizable to include your Moniker). Better use of the thread rating system. Perhaps if more people saw what types of threads were appreciated we would see more of those.

Additional Comments: I know this is against the nature of an anonymous forum such as this but I wish more people would learn to only post things that they would say if the recpient was sitting right in front of them. This is by no means unique to Gopher Hole. I have yet to find a forum on any topic from sports to computers that didn't have a fair share of internet tough guys and trolls. What I like about GopherHole: Recruiting information and some insider information not published in the local fish wraps. Other than that, I don't like much. Half the posters make this place uninviting and overwhelmingly negative.

What I'd like to see enhanced: Better moderating. If the intention is to be a fan site, make it a fan site. Get rid of trolls. Additionally, maybe it's necessary to create a separate forum for codgers and pessimists. Those of us who want to genuinely support, cheer for and be excited about Gopher football and basketball can have a forum to drink Kool-Aid and share our unabashed excitement like true fans. Those who want to pine for Mason, trash the coaches and their decisions, call out student-athletes and generally dwell on the negative can have their own "fan" forum.

What I like about GopherHole: Selection Sunday, Bleed, G4L, Snowman, Johnny, BGA and others: their invaluable information and insight on the game. And where else can one find people talking about everything Gopher Basketball with no fees or strings attached? Knowing the recruiting details is especially great.

What I'd like to see enhanced: More "where are they now" features. Also maybe an upgrade in technology. It gets painful hitting the refresh button... (nice to have, I am not complaining)

What I like about GH: The dedicated work done by Bleed and Gopher Lady. The sense of community. The inside info offered by Johnny Gopher, the NCAA basketball breakdown offered by Selection Sunday. The ability to stay on top of the program while living in another continent.

What I'd like to see enhanced: A quick overall recap of the basketball games-who stood out, who struggled, etc. Something like cduff does for Gopher football. I realize it's more difficult to pull off though with two games per week.
