I have a few pieces that my wife got from her Grandmother a number of years ago that are litterally sitting in a box collecting dust and we figure we might as well try to sell them. I imagine they are worth a few hundred bucks, but probably not more than that. I'd have no problem putting these pieces up on ebay, but I have no idea what grade, quality, etc. it is so I wouldn't be able to provide a fair description. Are any of these "cash for gold" places in the Twin Cities worth going to? If so, which ones? Is there room for negotiation or do you just basically accept what they offer?
Thanks for any thoughts.

Unless you are really strapped for cash, I would wait. Gold is going to sky rocket in value. It may hit as high as $3k yet. The global monetary system is in the early stages of a complete meltdown. From a personal standpoint, there are aspects to passing down family "heirlooms" from generation to generation that are special. Besides that you never know when your granddaughter may end up in need and you are just helpless.

there is room for negotiation. But just remember the necessary mark-ups are huge in the biz, don't expect great value. For instance a new ring in a store might cost you 2k, you might get three bills if you bring it into a gold place. Also scam artists love the jewelry trade. Be careful. Typically their MOD is to get the jewelry out of your possession in exchange for a non secured payment. Money order/western union scam. Best to get things appraised from a pro who isn't trying to buy them off you before you sell just so you know where you stand. Then if you're not in a hurry seek out a consignment situation. You'll have a shot of at least getting half of what they're worth. Or just take what you can get and be done with it, no shame in that.

My wife sold a gold coin that she received as HS graduation gift in 1968.
She sold it to a coin dealer for $575 (value of gold in the coin). The $-for-gold places offered $100 or less.

There's a little jewelry store on Minnetonka Blvd. called Elequent Jewelry that I've heard buys gold. I don't know anything about their pricing.
As DH said, I would consider saving some of the pieces as family heirlooms. What is gathering dust today might be meaningful to your kids, or even their kids, at some point.

Plus, "your kids or even their kids," are going to need all the help they can get to pay for Obamacare.

Hardly a hijack, it's a legitimate and very practical consideration for anyone holding any quantity of gold.
