This was my first Iowa game at the dome. I knew there would be a lot of them but their turnout was ridiculous. I guess it helps that there is nothing else to do in Iowa than root for the corn-pigs when the crops are out and the hogs are fed. If I lived in iowa, I'd get the heck out of there every chance I had too.
And what a *&^!#*&^!#*&^!#*&^!#*&^!#*&^!#y and delusional lot they are. Greene might be an all-american this year, but he won't get a whiff of the Heisman despite how loud you yell that he has it locked up. Based on the iowa fans around me, I'm pretty sure that "iowa" stands for "inbreed, obese, whiskey-drunk, a$$holes. Thanks for going out of your way to yell in my ear, block my view during a play to dance in front of me on your way to get your 4th beer of the quarter and drop f-bombs in front of 6 year-olds because you can only buy 1 beer at a time and can't smoke indoors. Classy.
Hat's off to thee corn-pigs, you whomped us good. You beat a young, worn out team. You'll go to a better bowl than us and you'd probably beat us 7 out of 10 times. But there is only one way to measure the success of a program - National Titles.
Minnesota 6, iowa 0.

I'm sorry that I offended you with the 6-0 comment. But that shouldn't make you cry!
the funny thing about Iowa fans, (or any overly idiotic fans in such regard), is that they think THEY actually had something to do with their team's success.
The fact is that at any college football game, those on the field are 18-22 year old kids, many of whom, especially in cases like Minnesota and Iowa, aren't even from their supposed "home state team."
This is just a natural part of being a fan. They think that just because their university's football team won a football game, it makes them superior. And besides, its Iowa; other than their fabled wrestling program, what else do they have? Answer: not much. As a result, their actions might be a little more extreme.
In any case, sorry you had a bad experience. I know plenty of good hawkeye fans. But, like all fanbases, they have their share of knuckleheads as well.
As an aside,
I did laugh at the post Gnarls...that's some pretty good stuff ;)
I'll have to keep that one on file for later use!!!

I hate the Hawks as much as anyone else but we had some pretty good fans around us and we had a good time, even with this drubbing.
Nice touch there Gnarls :-)

I also love the Iowa bashing on this forum. Iowa isn't an different from Minnesota, besides drinking what does anyone do differently on here that strays from the norm? Visit art exhibits?

It's ok, their 23 national championships came in the form of 21 wrestling championships, a men's gymnastics championship in 1969 and a field hockey championship in 1986 :D makes me feel a little bit better.

Well, the fact that the last of your oft-mentioned national championships in football happened in 1960 (the other five from 1934-1941) is probably not a recent memory to most of the fan base of either school, either.
FYI - Wisconsin won seven Boxing Championships (last in 1956), but that isn't very relevant either (other than that my Mom accepted a date to a boxing match with my Dad and pretended to be interested just to go out with him). As previously stated, things that happened so long ago are of very limited interest.

You sir are a complete idiot and I'm surprised you could summon up enough intelligence to get that post of yours on the internet. Sucks to lose in home territory doesn't it? Especially when your team can't even manage to score a single point. By the way, the last national title the Gophers claimed was in 1960. 48 years ago! Thats nearly half a century. If you are measuring the success of the entire program based on that than you clearly need to stop living in the past. I had to register just to reply to this idiocy. The Iowa fans were doing you a favor by blocking your view of the field, you obviously didn't miss much judging by the scoreboard.

Posts like this is what embarasses me about my fellow Minnesotans. I'm sorry, but I'm not sure if you were at the same game as I was, but us Iowa fans tended to be younger, better looking and not quite so chubby or old. Hell, I had seats on the 50 yard line and most of the fans around me were either Iowa fans or 70+ in age Gopher fans. The younger ones tended to be soft, phlegmatic and meek Swedes :)
Sal
Tell me you're kidding. You talk about how you are embarrassed by your fellow "Minnesotan's" post and then follow up talking about how old and fat our fan base is? Time to move back to Iowa.

Well....it is the truth. The best Gopher fans are of the "older" variety and where I sat this season, there were hardly any fans under age 60 with the exception of little kids with their grandparents. Where were the Gopher fans at yesterday? It was all Iowa fans filling up the bars downtown, providing a bit of an "economic stimulus" for the downtown area. I find it funny how my fellow Minnesotans resort to creating stereotypes and calling opposing fans "fat" and "hicks" in order to make themselves feel better. You do it to Badger fans too. Pathetic if I may say so.

Wrestling is to Iowa as hockey is to Minnesota. Please don't discount the 21 NCAA wrestling championships - they're just as important as every banner that hangs in Mariucci. And the Iowa/Iowa State programs are headed towards domination for the foreseeable future. And it's nice to see the Gophs at #1 in hockey.
Iowa fans are enthusiastic - we would be too if we had their record over the last 10 years. They even brought their unifying cheer to the Metrodome - too bad we don't have anything to counter with. They could have sold the naming rights to their stadium for a ton of money - instead, they took the high road. We sold our souls for a few shekels - that will be the curse at "The Bank".
Well, I guess that excuses what you said then
Trust me, ALOT of what has been said about Iowa and Wisconsin fans is also true.
Oh, and its great that they contributed some kind of "economic stimulus" or whatever. Clearly, Minneapolis should be relocated to somewhere in Iowa. Oh wait, they already have the booming metropolis of Des Moines.
Again, time to head back to corn country.

Minnesota has a lot more chances for naming rights...Target, US Bank, TCF, United Health, Medtronic, 3M, Best Buy, St. Paul Travelers, Ameriprise, Xcel Energy...I can keep going if you want.
Iowa has a few insurance companies that could pay naming rights but the money wouldn't be near as much as Minnesota could bring in.

First of all it isn't about the money. Wouldn't you feel better about seeing a game on Nagurski Field/Memorial Stadium. Put in whatever great Minnesota names you want to.
Was there a bidding war for the naming rights to the stadium? Go to the next board meeting of TCF and ask if they're happy with their decision in light of the current economic downturn - and carefully watch the expression on their faces when they say, "Yes - we're VERY VERY VERY happy." OK yeah right. (Well, at least it wasn't the worst investment they've made.) The best we could do for the stadium club was "Dairy Queen"? You mean 3M, Best Buy et al weren't interested?? Wow, I wonder how much those Blizzards are going to cost at the stadium.
It'll be interesting to see who picks up the rights to the Target Center, now that Target seems to be lukewarn about re-upping. Naming rights are going south - big time.

seriously, just shut the hell up AND stop referring to yourself as a "fellow minnesotan". it makes you look even dumber than you already are. you have made it pretty obvious you are a "closet" hogeye grad who was raised in iowa, then moved to minnesota and likes to spend a good portion of their day posting on this website as a "critical" observer of the gopher program. kind of like half your sorry pig dependent state. so please quit with the lectures already bud!
god, there is nothing more pathetic & annoying than most of you hogeye and becky fans (most now living in or near minneapolis/st. paul) who have nothing better to do than register for gopher fan sites so you can make a few posts to try to tell gopher fans how to "behave" and how they need to quit ripping on ia/wi. yet most of you then go right back onto your hogeye/becky fan sites and continue with your minnesota & gopher bashing.
quit being such hypocrites and get off your f-ing pedestals! it is like the pot calling the kettle black. that is all……

in front of mine are not season tickets and oh what a show is put on every home game. The rubes who sit there are always drunk before they arrive. This year it was Northwestern, Michigan, and Iowa. The Michigan fans were the worst but they were all pretty bad. The behavior that I have witnessed is not acceptable especially when you are visiting another teams home field.
I guess I do not understand the getting hammered part. Are these visitors drunk because they hate where they come from and they have to return there soon? Are they depressed because they are stupid? It is obvious that they are fans of the opposing teams but it is also obvious that they never graduated from there. Should I start drinking to have a good time? Oh wait I actually like it here.
The time of opposing teams taking over our home field is over!!!!!

best buy made something like a $3-$5 million unrestricted donation to the stadium in the very beginning of the process and asked for nothing tangible (i.e. naming rights) in return. i think they deserve credit for that.

Yes they do! Do you know if TCF was in a bidding war or did Maturi just throw out a number to the prospects and then said ... if you pay that amount, it's yours.

Apparently, even though you are from the great and mighty state of Minnesota who has a pro team, you dont know that people drink beer at every NFL game or game played in an NFL stadium. At Iowa, we have a real college stadium owned by the University and NCAA rules dont allow alcohol in these stadiums. When Iowa fans go to a game in another city where we play a S&itty program without a real college stadium like Minnesota or Pitt, we like to drink some beer, be social, have fun, and cheer loud for our favorite squad. I know that it must be hard for you to imagine having a fan base that supports your team in a rivalry game at a school 4-5 hours away from campus and brings more enthusiam to your, i mean the Vikings' stadium, than your own crowd does all year.
Keep talking like you are a badass because you are from the chefs hat, the place isnt special. It is like Canada for 9 months a year. I travel up there from Dallas every other month for work and couldnt imagine being exiled the MSP for any longer than a few days. It is a beatiful city and the people are generally friendly but you have insanely stupid Canadian accents and are of no greater intelligence than the average Iowan (that is a compliment:)). The states are very similar with the exception of your true urban area with little to no diversity due to the fact that nobody wants to deal with sub-zero temps for 3 months. Get off your high horse and come back down to earth buddy, we like Iowa. We like the people, we like the state. It is a good place that I would gladly go back to if the weather didnt suck. You are from a place very much like Iowa with a little different scenery and a football program that hasnt done anything besides have a top 25 recruiting class in the last 40 years.
Iowa just dismantled your "up and coming" program in a manner that is both embarrassing and degrading to your entire team. The OP stated that MN is a young team that was worn out and congrats on beating them. Comical, check the two deeps for Iowa, we start and play a healthy amount of underclassmen and like 6 seniors. Face it, you wish you had something like we have with Iowa football, people actually care about it and show up for it. Meanwhile, your state focuses on the ineptitude of the Vikes, T-Wolves, and the oh so popular sport of Hockey (I know, we do it with wrestling too). The new stadium isnt going to do it either fellas. Go ahead and have your grand opening, we will be there in full force as usual in two years. Iowa fans dont mind making a 4 hour trip to party in a decent city for the weekend and watch our Hawkeyes continue dominating this series. So keep talking about how great it is to be from Minnesota, I am Happy where I come from and where I am at. The "great state of Minnesota is looked at in a similar light from a national perspective.
You guys sure talk a lot of S&i+ for having such a broke down program who has only managed to beat IOWA 8 times in the last 25 years. This "Rivalry" is boring, I hope ours with WI heats up to give us some excitement down the road.
You want to talk about a classless bunch of fans, how about the Gopher fans yelling "we hate iowa" before the game even started. Must have been forshadowing for the result to come. It was nice to see these die hard gopher fans leaving by the thousands at the start of the third so the real fans dressed in black and gold could show support for their team. The only thing that would have been better was if Iowa had something to play for like in '02 and the goal posts came down again. Have fun in Detroit Gophers!!!!

Which play did they block your view of? Spievey #19 INT return for a touchdown? Or was it the Stanzi to DJK #15 long pass for a touchdown? There are to many plays to mention and since the Gophers only had 6 first downs you couldn't have missed much.

Except for the dude. And very nice looking. Okay one of them was exceptional making up for the remainder of the group. Besides she was with the MN fan, who had some of the best moves of anyone on the field or in the stands.
Incredible how high and mighty these Iowa folks are.
The fact of the matter is no one cares about them for 364 days of the year and one day each year, they crow about how far superior they are because of their football team.
Wow. When they get good at some other sports, then maybe I'll care a little more about their football dominance. That's what makes the Wisconsin rivalry fun. The Badgers are national contenders in several other sports, as are the Gophers, so that rivalry extends to other sports as well as football. Iowa? Not so much.
They'll gloat over this win for the rest of their year, because the fact is, other than wrestling, they have nothing else. So just expect it, that's the way they are and always will be.
Having said all of this (and admittedly, in a rather nasty tone), every school and every fanbase has their fair share of idiots. I'm just sick of all the gloating by hawkeye fans over one football game. One sporting event that apparently defines a whole year. To me, that's over the top.
Time to move forward in the discussion.

Just so that I am not completely ignorant to your superior athletic programs, what is it that MN is a perrenial contender in besides Hockey? I dont think your B-Ball program is much above Iowas lately or even in the last 20-25 years for that matter. Sure you had your Final 4 but we had some good runs here and there. how does every little hogeye d-bag like yourselves find your sorry little way onto a gopher message board to post your filth?! troll hogeye posters like you that waste the rest of your weekends to sit on an opposing team's message board trying to flame proves our point time and again that you pig-f'ers have a serious inferiority complex when it comes to all things minnesota (no matter how hard you try to deny it we all know it is true) otherwise you wouldn't be on here. the facts below are likely the main reasons why (especially when it comes to college football). get a life losers!
minnesota begins big 10 football conference play (1896 - big 10 charter member)
we are nice and let you pig f-er's begin big 10 football conference play (1900)
hmmmm......only four years separates us in conference play, yet in all that time your little hogeye football team has been unable to win the big one, the NC. no wonder you hogeye (and becky badger) rubes are never interested in "looking back at the TOTAL history" of the 3 different programs. you all have selective 15-30 year memories. and the one year you pig f-er's came close (1960-61) to an NC who was it that took it all away from you down in ioweee city to claim the national championship all for themselves? oh that's right....it was the golden gophers of minnesota who beat down your hogeyes, biatch!
all-time series: minnesota leads 59-41-2
floyd of rosedale series: minnesota leads 39-34-2
big ten titles: minnesota (18); pig f-er's (11)
AND MOST IMPORTANT OF ALL: national titles - minnesota (6); pig f-er's (0)
history is history and you can't pick and chose which parts you want to look at. it ALL counts in the end. come back and talk smack to us about football when you have the upper-hand in any of these categories. won't happen punks! go make love to your prize pigs now.
:)
For a fan base that expects to win over the Gophers and doesn't define their season with a win over Minnesota, you folks are spending an awful lot of time over here telling us how inferior we are compared to your mighty Hawks. Oh, and doing an awful lot of "gloating" at that. No problem. That's what happens with rivalries, which is why I also retort rather nastily back.
But I would like to make one more point. The U fields extremely competitive teams in a lot of sports, including volleyball, men's and women's cross country, men's and women's track, men's and women's hockey, wrestling, gymnastics, swimming, women's basketball (and its looking like it at men's basketball soon) soccer and baseball. In fact, the sport that is the most inconsistent at the school is probably football. This is why I don't really care about what the rest of the nation thinks of us. The fact is that Minnesota has a top 20 athletic program and the Director's Cup reflects this every year. Iowa seems a little more imbalanced. I'm not sure why that is, Hawkeye fans would obviously have much greater insight here than I do.
For me, it's not so much looking down my nose at Iowa as questioning why they aren't better in other sports. Football is good, wrestling is superb. But after that, there seems to be a noticeable dropoff, other than the women's basketball team which I think won the Big Ten last year right???
If anyone feels like responding, feel free. Otherwise, I will simply wish Iowa good luck in the bowl game and see you next year at Kinnick.

yeah, kind of like your hogeye wrestling national championships that no one cares about. btw - being classy and dealing with iowa pig f-er's are not two things that go together. it is like oil & water. they just don't mix. you should know that by now. so please don't give me the "high road" lecture - you hogeye fans are some of the worst offenders.
don't you need to get back to your boring ass insurance job in des moines now?! later bud.......

My, this is a pretty defensive group.
There's hardly been any gloating or celebration, and every Gopher fan here is slamming the keyboard with a mini-rant in complete rage. It's pretty sad.
I wonder what Bronko Nagurski Gopher does as a job compared to a "boring ass insurance job" that allows him to post on a message board at 1:33. Must not be too important.

In all honesty, this thread has talked more about Iowa wrestling than I've uttered in my entire life. I couldn't care less about wrestling. And "I should know this by now"? I've been an Iowan and a Hawkeye my entire life and have yet to run into a situation where I was forced to accuse opposing fans of having intercourse with an animal. These awful fans you speak of... all teams have them. All teams have good fans too. Which side of the fence do you think you land on? Or are you going to give another version of "Well at least I'm not as bad as you guys..."
At least you can take solace in the fact that your comments were so stupid that people registered on this site just to inform you of your stupidity.

Well, I figured Hawk fans took over your stadium so we might as well take over your forums as well. What size of pants do you wear? I'm in the market for a solid pair of jeans...

- Most of the Iowa fans I met, including the two sitting by us and the ones in the long lines at the gate, were decent people. I hope that I would have been as gracious if things were reversed.
- The loss was the worst Big Ten loss in Gopher history. Any Gopher fan who is "pretty defensive" about the loss is taking it pretty damn well.
- I read the Iowa boards after the Michigan State loss (third in a row I think) and the number of posters who want to fire Captain Kirk and throw Christianson (sp) out of school was pretty damn high. The guys calling for Brewster firing have, for the most part, been calling for it since the day he was hired.
- This is the MOST I have said about Saturday's debacle and like Texas Tech, Indiana, Michigan and Notre Dame fans I'm not thinking or saying another damn thing about our's either:(
Now I hope Iowa and all other Big Ten teams (even Wisconsin) beat the bleep out of whoever they meet in the Bowl Games.

So...... if we are done with all the name calling and crying, I would like to join Iceland12 in wishing all B10 teams good luck in the bowl games. Hopefully, the Gophers go to Arizona or Florida and get a win.
Those young offensive and defensive lines will use this game in the off-season to keep the fire burning in training sessions. I imagine they will pretty damn solid in year or two.
I saw asshole Gopher and Hawkeye fans, but by far I saw a lot of great fans on both sides and enjoyed the Gopher fans.
Good luck, Gophers, and Go Hawkeyes!!!
Handsome Pete, I hope this helps.

There's not a fan base I hate more than Iowa. We can make fun of that drunken hoard of scum all we want. But they are some of the best fans in all of college football.

Better to have been a past champion than never a champion at all. Go touch some guys in singlets why don't ya :D

There's a difference between being defensive about their team and being defensive about Iowa fans. I'd be more pissed off that my team laid a massive egg than a fanbase I don't like. When you start rattling off about championships you won before World War II, I say that's being a bit ridiculous.
Most fans on Iowa's Football board are awful. I don't even read it but stick to the Premium Board; seems to filter out a good portion of the meatballs.

does that not say enough - I have been season tix holder since '93 and that was the first game I ever left early - I've sat through to the final gun in some very sad situations but I just could not stomach what took place Saturday - give the Hawkeye fans thier - due cease any further interaction - we'll be back! not sure when but we will be back!

only because my friends and I were being hit on by some extremely sloppy drunk Iowa fans wearing striped overalls. They were the most obnoxious guys and said some pretty disgusting things to us. That has never ever happened to me at a Gopher sporting event before in my life.
I would normally chide Bronco Nagurski Gopher for being less than diplomatic but after what I experienced on Saturday I have to say RIGHT ON BRONCO!!!!
If Only Gopher fans would travel so well. Is it really the Iowa fans, or is it there are significantly fewer, passionate Gopher fans?

seriously, where do you lame hogeye S.O.B.'s keep coming from?! please go glad-hand each other on your hogeye board already and get the F out of here! no one on this board gives a rip what any of you rubes from pig land think about gopher fans, our football program, etc.
most of us understand that when one takes the whole picture of both programs into account from beginning to end that our college football program is vastly superior and has had far more legitimate national success than your little cornfield college to the south. that is why you will never get a TRUE gopher football fan to give an inch to any of you pig lovin', mouth breathers - no matter how hard you try to convince us otherwise or regardless of how many of you hogeye fans show up for a game in the last 20 years because there is never, ever anything else more worthwhile going on in ioweee on a saturday.
the ones that do "give an inch" to you are either the apathetic "sometimes a fan, sometimes not" types OR more likely the "off-spring" trolls of one of the thousands & thousands of hogeye grads who quickly move on up to the minneapolis/st. paul metro once their sentence in iowa city is up.
this thread is getting lame. let's move on already.....or come back for some more. either way piss off hogeyes! it is impossible to be diplomatic with any of you pig lovers, so i am not even going to try. oh and go gophers!

Again, good luck to the Gophers in their bowl game.

. . .Can the same thing. Interesting.
I doubt a victory over Minnesota defines their year. You're giving yourself a little too much credit. A victory over MN is expected, so the "gloating" really isnt an issue.

Anyone see this chat board thread from gameday? Their fans are brutal:
http://www.blackheartgoldpants.com/2008/11/22/668075/lastultimatefinalgamethrea#comments
The site that this is from is called "Black Heart Gold Pants." With the sheer volume of cigarrettes and beer that the Iowans consumed Saturday night, Sunday morning must have been more like "Black Lung Wet Pants."

The Hawkeyes are the only team in Iowa for fans to cheer for. There are no pro teams down here so there are more people who are willing to travel.
I love the Gophers football team and could probably go to every game (home and away) if I wanted to, but I like to be able to go to a Gopher basketball and hockey games, Twins games, and Wild games. I can only afford so much.

we were all REALLY starting to miss your green bay fudge packer induced rants about your hate for all things vikings related. it really added a "special something" to the discussion about gopher football here on the board. get a life bud......

Wow, I thought this thread would be dead and buried by now. Since it isn't, let me say this.
To Gnarls, a timeless burn and impeccable timing getting it in as the 1st reply.
You might be a little ticked when the shoe is on the other foot. If you rip your team when it is instead of the opposing fans filling your stadium, good for you.
That's not my initial reaction though, so I criticized the black and gold mob around me who I found rather annoying. It was cathartic. I am glad to hear that my experience was not necessarily the rule on Saturday. My Iowan co-workers, who, coincidentally, happen to raise pigs, were more than decent considering the magnitude of this debacle. Had webber completed a pass I don't think the hawk-fans would have been an issue, or at least to such a degree. To my great regret, that didn't happen.
I was also embarrassed by our inability to even fill 1/2 our stadium and that falls squarely on gopher fans. Iowans will follow Herky across the nation as long as they can buy tickets. Next year, the only visiting colors I want to see are on the field and at the top of TCF. Hopefully, kinnick north died along with the gopher's tenure in the dome on 11/22/08.
