What most people thought would happen for a long time now... it has finally happened.

Morally, I have not decided if this is a good or a bad thing.

But as a selfish GopherPuck fan, this is a victory!

Big Brother NCAA deserves the loss of a number of hockey programs to a new league resembling the W and having close ties to the NHL. North Dakota, Denver and Colorado College from the NCAA along with franchises in places like Salt Lake, Boise and Spokane would provide a decent beginning. Other NCAA possibles include D1 programs in Minnesota, Michigan, New England and Alaska. Most of them are happy and would consider such a move about the time the moon turns its proverbial blue, but there are a handful here and there that have been stepped on by Comrade NCAA over the years and might welcome a way out that would allow continuance of a strong hockey program.

North Dakota plays other sports too. So, if they would leave the NCAA to keep the nickname... would they disband all their other sports or only leave the nickname in place for the hockey team?

And, will a nickname change hinder their ability to continue a strong hockey program?

Is it common/possible for a collegiate program to just up and leave the NCAA? Didn't think this was an option.

A college can leave the NCAA if they wish, they aren't obligated to remain.. They could join the NAIA, for example.

Money talks. That's why schools don't leave the NCAA. Even if the NCAA is the most hypocritial stupid organization in the world.
