Who are your favorite college basketball announcers?
After GopherRock made the thread about Raftery, it gave me the idea (I hope this hasn't been posted yet) of this thread. Who is your favorite college basketball announcer/announcing crew?
Mine would definetly have to be Raftery/Bilas/Mcdonough(?), Nance/Packer, and Lavin/Musberger/Knight.
I can't stand Doyle on BTN, not a fan of Dick Vitale, hate Digger Phelps.
Who do you guys like/dislike?

A trio of Gus Johnson, Lavin, and Raftery would be epic

Lavin (preferably with Musburger) hands down and it's not even that close. He has a great knowledge of the game and the history of the game. He also has a very underrated sense of humor. He seems to love doing BigTen games as well. Bobby Knight is probably a distant second. Not sure who third would be, possibly Bilas. I don't really like anyone at CBS.

Worst ever was last year @ Northwestern when both Doyle and Tollackson were the color commentators.

I choose Brent Musberger and Bob Knight, and if we throw in Steve Glavin, in my opinion we have the Howard Cosselle/Don Merideth quality. Dandy Don and Tell It Like It Is Howard.

I haven't heard him at all because I'm living in Spokane right now, going to law school. I don't doubt that he's doing terrible. I was on the woman's basketball scout team last year and occasionally talked with some of the men's players. One time I talked with Hoff and Abu and they were telling me how he puts zero time into broadcasting. He doesn't practice, prepare, or take it seriously. They basically said he just shows up and expects that he's going to be great at it. They said he approached it a lot like the way he approached basketball.

I really think Bilas knows more than anyone else, and I enjoy his commentary. I can't STAND Billy Packer...but am probably in the minority that enjoy Vitale.

Billy Packer is terrible. My dream crew would be Gus Johnson, Steve Lavin, Jay Bilas. Clark Kellog was also pretty solid when he still did announcing instead of being in the studio.

Kellogg is OK. Never been a big Nantz fan.

Forgot about Nantz, he's pretty good as is Gus Johnson. Probably the only 2 CBS guys I like. I hate Kellogg, Seth Davis, and Greg Anthony. Not a fan of Vitale, Digger, and Davis either. Lavin, Knight, and Bilas are the best.

I was also a big fan of Clark Kellogg back in the day he did games. Lavin is a complete Bo Ryan sychophant, so I find him hard to stomach. I thought that Vitale was terrific back in the early ninties, but has gradually become unlistenable.
I have to say that I really am enjoying the Gus Johnson/Shon Morris combo for the B-10 tourney.

Raft has been my fav. for a while. I like Munsberger better for football, but he is a true play by play guy I can listen to without getting annoyed at. I still like Billy Packer-always have. I don't care if he is a d-bag or not as it doesn't have anything to do with my enjoying a hoops game. The guy knows his stuff. Kellogg is o.k. Bobby Knight is solid as expected. It's hard to like Gus Johnson, but he has sticked up for D. Johnson big time, so that is nice.
It sounds like most agree on Lavin, Musberger, Knight, Johnson. All solid.
I too dislike Doyle and his pompous attitude on the BTN. As for Vitale, he is probably the most annoying announcer ever.
Funny, I know very few that can stand Vitale. I remember watching Bob Huggins get interviewed once on TV when he was still in Cincinnati and he talked about how he knew he had to change how he recruited players after bringing them on campus and walking them by pictures of past players. The kids would see pictures of past greats like Rick Roberson or Oscar Robertson and they wouldn't even bat an eye. Then they would see a picture of Huggins with Vitale and they would get all excited and say "wow you're with Dick Vitale!" Uggh.

I've always enjoyed the excitement that Gus Johnson and Kevin Harlan bring to a broadcast. Pair either one with Raftery and you have a great team. Vitale can't retire soon enough.

Vern Lundquist is money!!!

Some solid announcers out there for sure mentioned across the board. I would go with Vern Lundquist- very knowledgeable and calm matched with either Steve Lavin or Gus Johnson who are both very spirited and unbiased in their announcing.
I will say Musburger is probably the most well rounded of them all along with Lundquist. I wouldn't mind some of these guys doing football games on ESPN/BTN instead of who call some of our games.

McDonnugh and Raferty are very good.
I can't stand O'Brien...he seems to understate everything and fails to question bad calls.
Lavin is good, but he's often held back by working with O'Brien....I have no idea why ESPN always finds a place for O'Brien...he's awful in everything he does...Baseball, Soccer, Basketball...
I'd love to see Musberger work with Lavin but they seem to love putting Knight with Musberger.
I'm not a big fan of Gus the screamer, although he is pretty sharp with noticing things.
Nantz has lost it and his failure to correct or know that the Gophers had beaten OSU with Turner is testament to his game slipping.
my rankings!
Play by play: 1)McDonnugh...2)Musberger...3)Johnson....4)Enberg. ...5)Nantz....6)Lundquist.....39)O'Brien
Color: 1)Lavin...2)Raferty....3)Bilas...4)Marques Johnson(good on pac10 games)....5)Vitale(for the Howard Coselle effect)....6)Kellogg

A lot of people really like him... but, I can barely listen to Gus Johnson. Really awful for me. Nails on the chalkboard. Although I enjoyed his, "he’s got getting-away-from-the-cops speed" line...
Not sure if this has been posted... the announcing teams for the tourney:
Jim Nantz/Clark Kellogg
Dick Enberg/Jay Bilas
Verne Lundquist/Bill Raftery
Gus Johnson/Len Elmore
Kevin Harlan/Dan Bonner
Ian Eagle/Jim Spanarkel
Tim Brando/Mike Gminski
Spero Dedes/Bob Wenzel

Gus Johnson... Enough said.
Does anybody else find Bill Raftery saying "man-to-man" as annoying as I do? I don't understand the reasoning behind that, and I know he does it with a few other phrases as well. He sounds like an idiot.

Lavin/Mussberger and it's not even close. The 2 of them feed off eachother so well. I always love how Lavin will compare fouls to a Lawrence Olivea/Gary Cooper reference. haha. These two together are comedic gold. Add Erin Andrews in there for some eye candy and as Mussberger would say, You have "A Dandy" on your hands!
