Okay, okay, he's a Hawkeye. But he's midwestern (Wheaton, IL), played in the pros (it was the Lions, but still), and has lots of coaching experience.

Iowa: Defensive Backs ( 3 yrs under Fry), Quarterbacks/Special Teams (1/Fry and 1/Ferentz)
Oklahoma: Quarterbacks (2/Bob Stoops), Offensive Coordinator (4/Stoops)
San Diego State: Head Coach (3 yrs)

Now his head coaching experience was not so hot, but he was a good assistant coach. Plus, he's available.

Just a thought...

His name has been bounced around many times since the Dunbar's departure.

Long is one of the more popular candidates being bounced around by Gopher fans. The other choices that seem to be popular are Todd Holgorsen (Houston OC, formerly at TT), and Major Applewhite (Texas RB, formerly Bama OC).

Long would be equally as bad a hire as Cosgrove would be
