Finally made it to the Ron Howard film, "Frost/Nixon" tonight. What the hell, I'm a sucker for movies based on true events.

I was barely in elementary school during the course of these events (interview was in 1977) so I was oblivious to it while it was going on but I was absolutely fascinated by the movie. True, it made you almost feel a little sorry for Nixon but it had me on the edge of my seat for the entire show.

I guess it's up for 4 or 5 Golden Globes but it doesn't seem to be showing in very many theaters. Of the 3 theaters within 6-8 minutes of the house, it was only showing at one of them.

I give it the two thumbs up. If you're a history buff, it's pretty interesting, with very good performances.

I haven't seen it yet. I'll be interested to learn how far Ron Howard's version of reality strays from the truth. He launched the project from Hollywood's typical anti-Nixon, pro-liberal perspective.

Nixon was no better than a common criminal who deserved to spend time in prison. Most conservatives today would not support someone like him for President. Do you remember his wage and price controls? One of the few good things that he did was his China policy. Other than that he was an extremely ordinary President, and a complete disgrace as a human being. Sorry if that is too liberal for you.

Upnorth,

I find your opinion to be extremely biased and short-sighted. Nobody excuses the man's frailties and mistakes, but ignoring his accomplishments is unfortunate. Presidents long after Nixon discreetly called him for advice, particularly on foreign affairs. He very quietly raised millions for various charities between the embarrassment of the Watergate years and the poor health that finally claimed his life.

Did you live the Nixon years or is it possible your opinion has been shaped by liberals in the media and Hollywood?

BTW, "no better than a common criminal who deserved to spend time in prison" describes many (if not most) politicians on both sides of the aisle. ;)

I think you'll like it G4L. I can't speak to the accuracy, particularly since I never saw the original interview series, but it didn't seem to lean heavily to either side.

As far as the Hollywood pro-liberal perspective... c'mon, it's not like it's a Michael Moore film or anything. No Robbins, Baldwin, Clooney, et al...

Have you ever listened to Opie discussing politics? He's as far left as the rest of them.

compared to todays definitions. He, like many moderates would be a man w/o a party. Current Republicans would hate him, G4L, and as you know he was behind changes like the EPA that many of todays conservatives would dislike.

Just FYI, the live stage version is playing at the State Theatre in Minneapolis through Sunday. It stars Stacy Keach as Nixon and Alan Cox as Frost. If you're into comparing movies versus live versions...
