Per ESPN:

Cretin-Derham Hall, alma mater of American League most valuable player Joe Mauer of the Twins, will be the base for ESPN’s “Homecoming” show to be filmed on Jan. 27.

The show features prominent athletes and their origins. Mauer has chosen his high school for the story of his development.

ESPN had a crew in town this week to check out the facility, and it was decided filming will be done inside the Raiders’ Field House. Lighting and staging equipment will arrive beginning Jan. 24.

I understand that there's an event or two planned with students and invited guests but haven't heard of any "open" invitation to the general community.
CDH's boys varsity basketball game against Stillwater will be moved to the old gym. That will be an interesting atmosphere given the smaller fan seating area, etc.

I used to read Rick Reilly all the time in SI but now he just creeps me out on ESPN. He hosts "Homecoming" if you didn't know.

for those interested...this took place tonight and it was a good time...it was really fun to see something like this in the making with Rick messing up sometimes, Joe's grandpa going way overboard, and Joe just being the man...

and from the comments he made tonight about his future, he is definitely staying here...

According to the Strib this morning, Mauer is on the cover of the most recent ESPN the mag for being "the most fan-friendly athlete." On ESPN.com, it's an insider story but I read and a bit of it elsewhere where it paints Mauer as bending over backwards to meet requests from fans.

He's without question my fav athlete and I would be crushed if he left. I have confidence in Bill Smith and other Twins' mgmt to get an extension done. My only fear thereafter would be they would use the size of his new contract as a reason over and over again to not pursue other talent or re-up current members of the team.

Just a guess but Mauer signs something around 7 years, $150 mil. That's the market for 27 yo superstar (3 time batting champ, MVP, gold glove catcher, great character, and a huge draw to the park). Another guess is if he actually hit the FA market next year, New York or Boston would pony up much more. They both would be in the market for a catcher (Posada's end is near for NYY while Victor Martinez isn't really a catcher any more and Varitek is about to retire as well). Those 2 teams competing for Mauer would drive his market value up well past $200 mil for 8 to 10 years.
