I went to the game last night, sat in excellent seats (not too tough these days), and was particularly interested in the matchup between Stefan Curry and Jonny Flynn. Hindsight always helps tremendously in assessing talent but it appeared that Curry was head and shoulders (literally) ) above Flynn. First of all, Curry is 4-5 inches taller than Flynn. He is also much more athletic than he appeared to be in college. Curry is a dead on shooter and he ran the offense, at least against an inferior team, very smoothly. Good passing skills and good defense. More and more, Johnny looks like a future backup pg in the league. He doesn't do anything particularly well except jump. I don't think that Curry will be an all star but I do think that he will be a 10 year starter in the league.
The comparative records of the two teams coming into the game (9-24, 7-25) are a bit of a mystery. My sense is that Nellie is underachieving with the talent available and Rambis is overachieving. The Warriors are a little small but they really fly. A great group of athletes. I think it is remarkable that Rambis has gotten seven wins out of this wolves roster. They are small, slow and Brewer is the only athlete on the team and he can't shoot the basketball (though he is improving in this area somewhat). Unless Brewer really improves his shooting, Jefferson and Love are the only two players on the team who will play meaningful minutes for somebody three years from now. Ellington has a nice shot but he is undersized for the position and a little slow. Kahn needs to have an amazing draft this year (none of the top 8-10 free agents will come here) because Flynn and Ellington do not appear to be impact players.
I will give the business side of the wolves operation credit. They are marketing the hell out of the product, trying every promotion and gimmick except maybe pay the temperature for a ticket. I'd guess there were 6,000 in the building last night which is actually pretty good considering it was a midweek game against a team with a lousy record and the substandard quality of the home squad.
