BITS & PIECES
1. The top 5 in the RPI heading into Sunday. ... (1) West Virginia (11-1); (2) Temple (11-3); (3) Kansas State (11-1); (4) William & Mary (9-2); and (5) Purdue (13-0).

2. Figure this one out -- Illinois is 8-0 at home and 1-0 on the road but is 0-5 in neutral-site games.

3. Done in by the Minnesota kids -- A tip for Santa Clara: If you decide to host a 4-team holiday tournament, make sure you bring in at least one sure-fire cupcake. The Broncos finished fourth in their own tournament, losing to Matt Janning and eventual champion Northeastern before falling to Noah Dahlman and Wofford in the third-place game.

4. The Big 10 Road Tote Board -- Michigan State, the Gophers and Purdue have the Big 10's only road wins to this point. I suspect we'll have at least one more by the end of today.

5. A bunch of hooey -- Conference USA reportedly was supposed to be improved this season. The hard truth? With Memphis apparently way down this season, the conference looks like it'll actually be worse. ... now it won't even have a heavyweight to carry the banner. UAB has been a pleasant surprise, but the teams expected to challenge Memphis this season -- Houston, Tulsa and UTEP -- have mostly been major disappointments. If UAB wins the conference tournament, it's very possible C-USA once again will be a 1-bid league.

6. Sign your John Hancock here -- The Gophers' first shot at a signature win comes Tuesday in West Lafayette. I don't expect it to occur, but much stranger things have happened in Big 10 basketball. Win Tuesday and the Gophers will officially announce themselves as a legitimate Big 10 title contender.
