From Fuller's blog today. Sorry if it has already been posted. Strong message sent by Lewis (in bold)

One of Minnesota's expected mid-year signings today is Citrus Community College (Calif.) cornerback Christyn Lewis, who wants to be a defensive leader next season.

Lewis, a 6-foot-1, 165-pound sophomore from Los Angeles, said he has come a long way physically (he was only 135 pounds as a senior) and mentally since high school. He hopes his work ethic rubs off on the younger players in spring practice next year.

"Coming in, I know what it takes to do the extra work; I most definitely will put that extra work in like I do here," said Lewis, who plans to enroll in January. "I'm probably going to be (spending) all day in the film room doing extra things that some of the younger guys probably won't be used to."

Losing senior starters Marcus Sherels and Traye Simmons, Minnesota could have an entirely new look at cornerback next season. Freshman Michael Carter should be in a good position to take over since he started to end the regular season this year.

But Lewis said the Gophers recruited him to be an immediate impact player on defense.

"I can be a big-time playmaker," he said. "That's what I did here. Everytime my coach asked me to make a play, I made a play -- whether it was blocking a kick or picking off a pass. Whatever they need me to do, I will do. I make big plays."

Lewis said Minnesota coach Tim Brewster and co-defensive coordinator/secondary coach Ronnie Lee impressed him the most.

"When I came out there, they made me feel like I was family," he said. "Talking to coach Brewster, he made me want to come out there right now and play for him."

Big Play Lewis?? doesn't work for me. We'll have to work on it before he gets here.

I don't know about a nickname but I like the kid's attitude...Hopefully that attitude and frame can hold about 10 more pounds before games start next fall!

Ummm, what coach in America DOESN'T say this to every recruit?

Actually, I'm more interested in his play on the field than his nickname. As long as he plays well, he or we can call him anything we want. :D

perhaps you missed the "he made me want to", which is different than "he wanted me to". i know it's tough, all this reading nonsense and what not.

i think we can do something for him. But I agree, as long as he produces I'll call him whatever he wants me to call him.

Art, you may be misinterpreting what Lewis is saying. Every coach says "I want you to play for me." But that's not what every recruit hears. I believe Lewis is saying that Brewster came across as sincere in desire to get him at the University of Minnesota and that was important to Lewis.

Of course, my interpretation could be wrong as well.

I would agree with you but would also say that virtually every recruit will list this or a similar sentiment about the coach whom they ultimately sign with.

I think Art is feeling lonely and unwanted, he wishes someone would come and say that to him.

Please! Not another Big Play nickname and mentality!

Just give us good, solid play, stay with the academics, be a good citizen and represent the UM well Mr. Lewis. The big plays will come once you earn the playing time. Glad to hear you will be enrolling soon and I will be looking for your on field stuff at the Spring game.

Absolutely. But every player likely reacts to every coach differently. What works for one recruit may not work on another. Everyone has a different antenna.

I love it. We have alot of young DB's (Carter, Watkins, Lewis, Bouie, Manuel, etc.), and at worst case scenario it's great to have this guy around and hopefully some of that will rub off on these kids.
