Two things stand out: He was fired with six years left on his contract and ""Weis finishes 35-27 in South Bend. His .565 winning percentage is worse than the .583 marks that got his two predecessors, Tyrone Willingham and Bob Davie, fired."
Now comes the part where Notre Dame that bastion of honor goes out and tries to get some other Head Coach to dishonor his current contract.

Yawn. Who cares.

Totally expected. I've heard rumors that Brian Billick was on the list of potential candidates. Don't see that working out. I have to wonder if things would have worked out different had the officials not allowed notorious cheater Reggie Bush to push Matt Leinart into the end zone back in 2005.

The effect of hovering around .500 every year as an independent means that their games are essentially meaningless. They are competing for no reason. There is no objective. They continue to waste the college careers of talented blue-chip recruits like Michael Floyd playing paid-for games against Connecticut that just don't matter. They are like the Harlem Globetrotters. Except they lose.
They say they want to be "in the BCS discussion" every year. But util their Hawaii Bowl win over Hawaii last year they haven't won a bowl game since the 1993 season. Frankly, the fact that they were ever part of the "BCS discussion" either as a practical or administartive matter was nothing more than a courtesy by the BCS.
NBC should quit being dumb-asses and put some real college football on television.

Notre Dame and NBC join the Big Ten and become the Big Ten version of CBS and the SEC. That would be nice.

Part of the reason they lost all their bowl games is that they always played in bowl games in which they were in over their heads. ND always gets good ratings and draws a crowd. So they ended up being selected over more deserving teams.

Then they could split the conference into divisions and have a conference title game.

Way to take a shot at all the kids that have competed for the U and have received their scholarships. I hope you are happy with yourself. Does that make you feel like a man? What an insult to all those kids at the U that work hard at football AND school.

Albeit very highly-regarded athletes. Not quite the same boat as Northwestern.

Play every team in your division and half the teams in the other division each year. Put the scheduling on a 4-year cycle so you don't ever go two years without playing a team from the other division. Example:
Year 1 - @Michigan, Michigan St., @Ohio St.
Year 2 - Indiana, @Penn St., Purdue
Year 3 - Michigan, @Michigan St, Ohio St.
Year 4 - @Indiana, Penn St., @Purdue
Not that it will happen anytime soon, just fun to think about.

When someone said he'd be available in 30 days on a thread the other day, I responded that I thought it would be a week. I should have bet the "way under."

There's no reason not to fire him now. The earlier the better.

The Irish will never return to prominence until they join a conference and they control their boosters.

Any program that hasn't fired their coach at this point in the year, and still does later, is inept. All the best candidates are already interviewing.
I give Weis a lot of credit for leaving graciously. He knew he was on the way out for several weeks. And he never took the bait; he never blamed anyone but himself.

I don't think Notre Dame would like being in a separate division from all three teams it would consider to be its standing rivalries (Michigan, Michigan State and Purdue). Of course, there's no way to split the Big Ten up into divisions without hurting some rivalries.

I don't think they would mind. Haven't they already started talking about not playing their traditional Big 10 games every year and mixing in some other Big 10 teams instead? IIRC Michigan will be dropping off their schedule for a year or two in the near future.

Why would a Big 12 team join the B10? Based upon records their conference is superior or maybe the 3 you mentioned would say "If we were in the B10 we would have a chance once in awhile"
If the b10 expands it will be either Notre Dame or an eastern team, in my opinion.

I would prefer a team west of Indiana, just for better balance. althought that is a bit limiting.
