View Full Version : Vikings Coaching versus the rest of the NFL
Sticking with the theme, is there anyone here that thinks Childress is a good coach? If so why?
This seems to be a very talented team that continues to have to win in some pretty odd ways.
I will give him credit for the fact that the defense has been good during his reign. However, the offense, the play calling, the clock management and the general lack of inspiration causes me to wish he was gone. I think the team has performed below it's level of talent despite the fact that we are in the playoffs.

He did do a hell of a job coaching himself out of the problems he created. so there is that.
Plus, really they did just win the division, so I'm trying to be nice.

I have no idea if Chilly is a good coach. I do know that he has a PR problem. No matter how many games he wins the fans don't seem to care for him. He's well...chilly.

The clock management before the half and at the end of the game yesterday was absolutely terrible. I'm hoping he won't be back next year but I doubt that will happen.
He was brought in here because he was suppose to be such a great offensive and QB mind. Our offense is average at best and our QB situation is not good. He manages the game poorly, makes stupid challenges, and just seems overwhelmed most of the time.
For the life of me, I don't know why we use the 2 TE, 2 RB sets all the time. All that does is enable the defense to pack even more guys into the box to stop AD and Chester. Spread it out with 3 WR and then run the ball.
With the talent on this team, we would be a super bowl contender with a good coach IMO.

Any team that punts with 2 minutes left in the game hoping that they will be able to get the ball back does not have a good coach. If Brewster had done something like that the local sports media would never let him forget it.

We said the identical thing about Glen Mason for his entire stint in Minnesota. Baseball managers don't need to worry about clock issues; football coaches do.
The biggest problem I have with Childress is that he has refused to build an offense around a good QB as most other winners have done. He thinks he's done his job by fitting the other pieces around one mediocre QB after another, and I don't think it works that way.

Offensively, is the problem Childress or is that clown Bevell? I'd be curious to know who's calling 90% of the plays.
The end to the half yesterday prompted me to punch the window of the car I was driving cross-country on my return from the holiday weekend. Should have had a 13-6 halftime lead and instead the Vikings hand the Giants a FG to make it 10-9 at half.
That being said, I'm not all that concerned by David Carr moving the ball against the Vikings for 10 second half points. First, Carr's a pretty good QB (he just spent most of his time in Houston lying on his back) and secondly, I would argue it's a lot harder to defend a team like the Giants yesterday when they have nothing to lose. The play-calling becomes a LOT more loose and much more difficult to defend. In a situation like that, you can call virtually any play you want at any time.

I think Bevell is calling the plays this year. The play calling was bad when Childress was doing it and it hasn't gotten any better now. It's still Childress' so called "kick ass offense" that we're running, so he still gets most of the blame from me. Childress also seems unwilling to compromise his offense so who knows how much leeway Bevell actually has.
