December 29, 2008
Patrick Reusse today will be named host of AM-1500 KSTP radio's morning show. His duties begin on Jan. 12. The program will run from 5:30 a.m. to 9 a.m. each weekday.
Reusse, who joined the Star Tribune in 1988, will continue his column each Thursday and Sunday in the sports section and on startribune.com.

Wow -- I didn't see that coming. It will be interesting to see (hear) how that show evolves, whether it will be more sports oriented or current events.
I'm in the minority around here -- I actually like Reusse (although he has definitely become he has become resentful of sports figures and the U over the past few years). However, I do believe makes a better second banana than host. And liberal hosts don't work very well on conservative stations.

I have been a Reusse fan over the years. But I thought tjgopher recently had some good criticism of him in another thread. REUSSE has not attended many gopher bb games this year yet he casually throws out the rumor of Tubby going to Ariizona - sort of like setting up a straw man to knock down - and make a comparison of Tubby to Lou Holtz. It seemed like an easy rumor to throw out based on very little actual information but garnered to get attention.
I think KSTP will try to link Reusse's show closely with their Twins baseball coverage but that likely won't keep him from coming up with some off the wall Tubby stuff in the off-season. Especially when he can continue harping on our soft NC Schedule at least until we win one of the next 2.

Good point on the Twins coverage--I am also one of the few on this board that enjoys Reusse, even if he goes a bit over the top on the Gophers from time to time. I think he is about as good as it gets for a baseball columnist, so having a morning show focused on the Twins, especially during the summer may work. If he gets too political, the show is doomed.

I wonder how Ruesse's left of center views will play on KSTP?

For him to have to wake up at 3am every morning for a radio show makes it very, very clear that Pat is very, very worried about the future of the newspaper business and probably concerned about his future at the Strib.

Interesting point. The way things have been going, I certainly can't blame him for being worried.
Somewhat along those lines, I've always wondered how journalists can get away with having a full time job at, e.g. the star trib, and then take on a half time job somewhere else. If I told my employer that Iwas going to work mornings somewhere else, but expected to receive my full paycheck, I'd get laughed out of the building (or maybe escorted. :) )
And in Pat's case, most morning show people go to bed really early--but I would think that his newspaper job involves getting stuff in right before deadline (midnight?) so that doesn't leave much sleeping time.
