View Full Version : Vikings QB's compared to rest of NFL

Forget about asking how many NFL starting QB's are better than T-Jack/Gus. How many backup NFL QB's are better than T-Jack/Gus? I think we saw one today with Carr, and definitely the Patriots backup would be in that group. It shouldn't be very difficult for us at all to upgrade this position in the off season. Maybe not a franchise type guy, but definitely someone serviceable.
Now that we're in the playoffs we won't have a shot at any of the top tier guys, so I'm wondering how we'll address this in the off season. Do we draft someone anyway, or go after a top backup?

I'm afraid Jackson reemerging has probably screwed up a fix.
I was thinking though that we're pretty solid overall, they might blow a top pick for a potential starter down the line. Then again don't they already like Booty? Another draft pick doesn't really change the dynamic at all. We end up with Jackson, Booty and another lower first round rookie QB. My guess is we're looking at the future with what we have. The best thing that could happen is that Gus is pissed and we go shopping. I think we'll attract more potential this year with a better recieving group and Chili looking like he may have bought himself another couple of years.

Jackson is not the answer and I think everyone knew that years ago. Given the line and RB he now operates with, he has sufficed at times, but he will never be the QB who takes a team deep into the playoffs. We've already wasted years in the attempt to replace Dante Culpepper. Management deserves an "F" on its report card.

Now THAT's something I'd really like to know; how much do the Vikings really like JD Booty?
I don't know that I'm sold on the notion that Jackson can't be "the guy". Will he ever be elite? I highly doubt it. But the fact is, he's been pretty serviceable since returning as the starter. Furthermore, by NFL standards, he's still pretty young.
I posted after the rugged start to the season that one thing which has really hurt Jackson and his development is not having a really good pass-catching tight end. Jackson's emergence in the last several weeks as being a somewhat respectable QB has come at the same time Shianco has finally began making an impact on offense. This is no coincidence.
All this being said, I wouldn't be disappointed if the Vikings addressed the position in the offseason, regardless of how they do it. Actually, David Carr was the guy I wanted them to get when he was available after the Texans cut him loose.
Time will tell I guess

You might be thinking small. I want another Super Bowl before I die.
Jackson has "backup" written all over him.

Well, you can cross Matt Cassel off the list. There are reports out there that Brady is not healing properly and may need more surgery, putting his 2009 in jeopardy.

When is the last time Vikings fans were happy with their starting QB for more than two years?
People are much too hard on Tarvaris Jackson. Whoever said that we have known for "years" that he was not the future of the franchise made a moronic comment. Jackson is a third year player. He was considered a project quarterback. And, he still is a project quarterback. A project quarterback who has 9 TDs and 2 INTs. He is averaging about 1.5 TDs per game (w/ significant playing time) and .33 INTs/game. Not bad. Certainly Jackson has his flaws, but he is presently in the ball control mode of a Brad Johnson with the Bucs, but Jackson still has an upside. Jackson's QB rating is 95.4 - which would place him in fifth place in the NFL (behind Rivers, Pennington, Warner, Brees), but ahead of EVERYONE else (P. Manning, E. Manning, Rodgers, Romo, Favre, Cassel, McNabb, etc.)
Honestly, Jackson has earned the starting gig, though it would be nice to get one of the good back-ups in the league to challenge him for a spot next year. I am not saying Jackson is the future, but he could be.

Don't call me a moron. I've been following the Vikings since they played their first game in Minnesota. Jackson is a project QB and will remain one. He starts only because an ignorant management team has provided no better option, not because he's capable of leading the type of offense we want.

You're a moron.

Thanks. Why discuss when it's so much easier to name call?

I said it was a moronic comment - not that you are a moron. Your sentiments are shared by many, and I am pointing out that it is an unfair, knee-jerk, untrue assessment. I am not trying to be abrasive, and did not mean to insult you.

Don't worry. It's impossible to insult me.
Jackson will be a project as long as he hangs around the league. Now we're entering the playoffs with a project playing at QB. There's no excuse for that no matter how many are being offered by Jackson's supporters.

I would not consider myself a Jackson supporter, but I do not think he necessarily needs to be replaced, either. He obviously has a lot to improve.

In the meantime, millions of dollars are being spent and years are being wasted. Sooner or later we have to acknowledge that the Super Bowl can't be a realistic goal as long as Jackson and other backups are playing QB.

People said the same thing about Monson for how many years?
